My friend asked me to put a set of headers on his '68 Coronet with 440 engine and since I'm retired I picked up the car and took it home and pulled the rusty old 2" Hooker Super Comps off. He brought me a set of headers he had bought from another racer. First thing I noticed was that they are 2-1/8", I don't see another 1/4" available in this engine compartment for these headers. I got numbers 1-6 mounted loosely through trial and error with the engine jacked up. #8 looks like it will go thru inner fender if I cut the access hole larger. #7 looks like it would go over the steering shaft and then down outside the torsion bar and then back to the collector. There is no possible way #7 will do that on this car without cutting it into 3 pieces and making slip fit sleeves for it. Then my friend says the headers are from a '65 Coronet.

Are there differences in the engine bay between a '65 and a '68 that make this project a lost cause? The collectors are slip fit and it looks like they will not clear the transmission mount. I spent 2 days fitting these headers and I am abandoning the project.

The 62-65 engine is mounted further forward. I'm assuming #7 and #8 tubes go thru the fender well with slip on collectors.. I run what I believe is the same header. Hooker 5320. We've run 4 sets of these on 3 different cars. Two of the cars had the motor moved back close to the 66-70 location. The right side has always fit. The left side depends on how far back the engine is. One set the #7 tube had to be raised to go over the steering shaft. Two sets fit perfect. One set the #1 tube was modified slightly.

The K members are different between 1963 to 1965, 1966 to 1971 are the same.
I'm putting a 1967 B body K member in my 1963 Plymouth Fury for better weight distribution, better header selection and so on up

Hi Doug, thanks for the pics and info, that makes perfect sense if the engine were a little bit forward these headers might fit without surgery. They look to be the same part number Hookers. This car is only about 550 HP so he does not need the 2-1/8". I will tell him to trade these off for a set of 2" for a '68.

If he is going to get new headers tell him to buy 1 3/4 or 1 7/8 headers. He doesn't need 2 inch or anything larger. Why make life a pain when it doesn't have to be.

I used 2 1/8" for the last set I built - 900HP 550+". 7K. And I used a smallish merge collector. Picked it up over what was on it.

Unless that will regularly see 5-6000 RPM, 2" is too big. The trend is smaller with port matching the headers to the heads as well. Velocity.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.
