2003 Ram 3500 4x4 Dually with the 5.9 Cummins

47re??

Backed up a slight grade in a driveway just like I did 3 times prior this morning and bang all reverse is gone... rant

I was empty with no load on the truck and only rolling about 2 mph...

At first I thought it disengaged from 4x4 back to 2wd high...but it was still in 4 wheel drive...

Made it around the block and parked it not knowing what else to do...

The 1-2 shift seemed normal but I wasn't going fast enough to check the 2-3...

After researching it it sounds like either the servo...servo arm or worst case scenario the reverse band...

Someone told me to test drive it and see if the 2-3 shift is normal and if so it is probably just the servo or the servo arm...

How do I diagnose where to start...

Any and all advise appreciated...

Drive it in manual low and speed up then close the throttle. No engine braking and no reverse likely means you lost the rear band function. (You could have also lost the direct clutch in the OD unit).

Broken band, servo piston retainer failure, seal failure, etc. would be my first guess if it “popped”.

No high gear with engine braking means you lost the front clutch.

And you have a 48RE if a mid year built truck. 47RE if early build.

Truck was ordered in early December of 02 and I picked it up January 31st of 03...

290K on the odometer and 105K since the trans was rebuilt...

I took it to breakfast this morning...about a 20 mile roundtrip...

I tried running it out in low some and the shifter will go into low but the column indicator doesn't light up and it always remains in second...

It seems like it is freewheeling when letting off of the throttle at about 10 mph or so...

If it wasn't for knowing it had no reverse you wouldn't know there was anything wrong with the rest...

1-2 shift was fine as was the 2-3...overdrive clicked in about 45-48 mph as it always has...

Maybe this is isolated to a servo or servo arm issue...

Ultimately when the pan is pulled from what I understand if the reverse band is not broken the trans is repairable without removing it...

You will probably need to drop the valve body to see what's going on. It will probably be obvious what broke but you can also do an air pressure test to see the operation.

From the description of operation an air test won't be needed; the problem is likely at the rear band...either the band is broken or the band link has popped out. If the band is broken, the trans will have to come out but if it's the link or the servo piston, it can be fixed in place.

Many thanks to those who replied... bow

Plan now is to get it in the shop on Tuesday and drop the pan...filter and valve body to inspect the reverse band...

If indeed I can get away with replacing the servo and the servo arm that is the plan for now...

If it is the reverse band that is broke I guess a complete trans change is in order...

This often happens because the band is way out of adjustment; the large gap between the servo piston and the lever slams the lever harder than when the gap is correct. Another reason to perform routine transmission maintenance.
