I have an above ground pool. I switched to Filterballs from sand this season. It worked great until the balls wouldn't backwash clean. I removed them all and rinsed them off. The water was greenish before I cleaned the media. The filter housing was pretty green. Guessing it was blowing the green water into the pool. Now I noticed the pool water is cloudy a bit when the system is running. When it shuts down and sits for a few hours, it's crystal clear. I'm attaching a photo of the issue. The black circle is the cloudy portion that happens when the filter is running. What could the issue be? I am going to close it soon, but wanted to see what could be done as far as maintenance or repairs on the system. Also, anyone else use the genuine Filterballs and not the knock offs on Amazon? How do you clean them? I emailed the company and no response back yet.

I haven`t had a pool for years. I never knew about the Filterballs so I have no experience with them. I checked the reviews on Amazon and there was a fair amount of complaints about them. .

They did catch a bunch of algae, but it didn't backwash the media clean. I may try sand again next year. Hoping the balls would work the same. Easier to get rid of the balls vs 150lbs of sand. Don't really have a place to dump it.

Michigan? Wait until it snows and sand the street in front of your house.

I worked for pool companies back in the 70's while in college and after work. Some things have changed, including filter balls I have no experience.
I can tell you the fine cloud is not unusual with any filtration type.
If the multiport valve is in good shape and not allowing unfiltered water to bypass I suggest super chlorinating then shutting off after running 2 to 3 hours (to make sure chlorine gets mixed in. Let it set for a day unfiltered. Vacuum bottom of pool to waste, back wash filter, then run in normal filter mode. See how that does.
There is a process called floccing that adds a chemical that will cause the fine sediment (cloud) to clump up.where it can be removed by the filter, or again let it settle out and vacuum to waste.
Vacuuming to the filter media will only re-insert fines to the filter only to later be returned to the pool. Idk if a floc agent can be used with filter balls so check on that first.
In any case if floc is used and every time you do not vac to waste backwash right after vacuuming.
Seeing the material in a cloud at the bottom, and as is settles out it is likely a mineral/crystallization issue. Have you ever drained down the pool 1.4 and topped it off. Sometimes pools fall out of balance over time with evaporation and topping off, along with added salts from liquid chlorine.
A detailed water analysis may help.

There is a fine layer of something in the pool, or at least in spots. I closed the pool yesterday. When I was vacuuming, I could see where the brush cleaned the liner. It was very slight, but I was looking for it. I have never vacuumed to waste, maybe I'll try that next time. Was planning on checking all the seals and gaskets soon and tackling any issues there. The Filterballs were going into a mesh bag and getting washed at the laundry mat. Not getting that gunk in my machine or drains. I probably will run on a wash cycle without soap to see how they turn out first. If that works for the media, I'll do it twice a season since they are not hard to remove and put back in. Way easier than sand to remove. I also read on another board to put a sock over the inlet jet to catch any fine particles. I did that when vacuuming and not sure if it helped or if it was just me hoping it did, but water didn't seem to cloud up as fast. Also read it may be air getting in the system on the suction side. I didn't see any leaks and the filter clear lid didn't show any air bubbles.

Iron will totally dissolve in pure filtered pool water making everything look crystal clear,
but if the pH of this pool water gets out of range
the dissolved iron will suddenly appear on the bottom of the pool as an extremely fine dark red powder.

BTW, how old is the pool water. I usually changed mine every 5 years or so due to the build up.

I'm not sure. It's a couple years old. I've never changed pool water in the old pool. The old one rusted and we replaced it. Never heard of someone replacing the pool water to be honest.
