Anyone have known original bolts that they can provide the length and head markings? I know they are 7/16 bolts one course one fine. But need length and any shoulder length on the fine thread one. Thank you.

Same for all starters, top is bolt and bottom is a stud/nut.

Your link says that the top is the stud and the bottom is the bolt. Also in 66-69 on direct drive starters there are two bolts and no stud.

Why not a stud for the top hole

I was looking for someone with actual known orig bolts. The AMK and other can pollute the market with near correct bolts.

I have a bag of bolts that are similar but different head markings, and differences in having shoulder, no shoulder, and minor length differences.
Really trying to get some input on originals, not the reproduction bolts.

When you are looking for "actual known orig bolts", you are looking for a survivor. How many of those exist? I looked in the '67 parts book (as I know you already have) and it list 6025571 as the upper bolt and 2642485 as the lower bolt. When I go to Dave Wise's bolt book, that lists 6023899 as both bolts. This is in conflict with the parts book. The later years, 1968 and 1969, only list the 2642485 and only for the lower. Don't know what to tell you. shruggy

Thanks. That book is not correct. Starter uses one Fine thread and one course. Plus those SEM are the Auto trans to block type bolts. Not used on the starter for a 4 speed. They used a split lock washer.

The Starter nose housing takes the 7/16" Fine thread bolt and the course bolt would go into the bell housing.

If I get a chance this weekend I'll see what is under there. Might be correct most everything else was.

Are you looking for the lengths of the bolts besides the diameter?

Well my starter was dead when I got he car and I reused the same bolts in the restoration, were they mixed up by the original owner over the years??? Anyway the top is Sems thru the starter the bottom is also Sems into the starter.

Yes. Overall length, shoulder length on the one and head markings.

Just as an engineering rule of thumb you just need to add the bolt diameter (i.e., in this case 7/16") to the starter flange thickness (where the bolt hole is). In other words if the starter flange is 1/2" thick plus a 1/8" washer you need to add all of those together to have the minimum correct bolt length 7/16 + 8/16 + 2/16 = 17/16 or 1-1/16" minimum That's just an example and not exact for your bolts. Standard practice is to have at the least the diameter of the bolt as thread engagement or you need to have 7/16th of the thread into the block or you will strip or pull out the threads of either the bolt or the engine block.

If you get bolts that have less than the diameter of the bolt thread engagement, then they are wrong. A little more than the bolt diameter is good but not less.

Good luck.

Mike
