Question for the paint guys. Got to thinking about shooting a pearl coat over my white base coat, Duster. So going on line to see how much a quart covers there was a post about the pearl colors over white? I figured just white but the guy said blue, gold, red and green to get the right tone. I was looking at a 2009 Cadillac and liking that color. Should I get white or one of the others, I’m defiantly confused here.
I have some pearl yellow from a 95 Stealth but..

If you're doing a standard solid white base, like an OE style work truck kind of a color, all you do is decide what pearl color appeals to you, mix the pearl additive (a powder) to
what is commonly referred to as an intercoat clear, or "clear base" in the amount that looks good to you, shoot the base, observe proper flash time per tds, shoot the pearl, again observe proper flash per tds, then after the pearl
is sprayed and flashed off properly you shoot your regular clear.

There are many different kinds and colors of pearl, there are color flop types, you can add some flake, the options are endless.

Base
Pearl
Clear
sometimes called Tri coat.

I have never personally shot it, but I believe there is very little room for error.
if something messes up and you have to sand it off, it's going to create issues.

Per original poster/not mine, here is a blue pearl example/not mine
per original poster " this is PPG Tri coat system/ the original W1 White with PPG VM4604 Blue Murano in PPG DBC500 as the inter coat clear."

There is alot out there and it can be a rabbit hole. A small amount of flake has a very nice look over white and just appears to be
something special without going full bore bass boat (which is also cool).

this assumes you want custom paint, though.

If you want OEM pearl instead, you can always just buy the 2009 cadillac system,
whatever was used, and duplicate that.

I like that blue and I think it would compliment the Jamaica blur interior and hood treatment like the yellow car

PPG certified painter here. i paint 3 stage pearl all of the time. also paint 4 stage Mazda paint a lot also. i THINK a few other manufacturers also have 4 stage paints also..

the paint you mention isn't exactly like you think it is. the base coat isn't just white out of the can it is a specific mix of base color to get the final result. a lot of 3 stage white colors don't start out with a completely white ground color. also there are other additives in the pear stage coat other than base coat clear and basic pearl tint. some colors have 3, 4, and 5 different color pearl tints in the pearl coat. also a lot of manufacturers are also adding specialty pearls to the mix in addition to basic pearls you think of.
i use PPG waterbase coat, i do believe there are about 20 different pearl tints in the mixing banks.

you CAN just add some pearl tint to base coat clear and spray over a white base color. i will warn you the results might be different than your expectations.
i would suggest spraying out a color card to test what the final color will look like before spending a LOT of $$$ and not get what you want.

My best friend has has a shop over 40 years. He shoots lots of candy and pearls.
He uses House Of Kolor on all new whole new jobs.
The paints are top notch. And I think easier to use at least for me.
I think you would be better off scuffing the whole car and shooting the recomended base instead of using your paint as base.

Frankly, if it was me, I'd find a color I like and do it that way.
You can spend a lot of money on spray-outs and home-grown colors.
Prepare to spend a lot of money whichever path you take, but more if you roll your own.
FWIW, pearls aren't much fun to match later if there's a repair.

If you go down this road make sure that you record how much pearl per pint you use in the mix.

I would also note what gun I used, what size needle, and air pressure at the gun, as well as how many intercoats(clear with pearl) you sprayed.

Do all that and getting a blendable match won't be too much of a problem.

You might also consider just adding the pearl to your base coat color to make things simpler. Lots of oem paint colors out there do this now.

Good luck with your project.

Thanks for all reply’s. Might get the loose stuff to put in base and try a small panel to see how it looks.

From what you are describing you want something to give the effect of a pearl(over the base coat) witch would be a "carrier" with a pearl additive. Similar to a candy coat, If you are not familiar with the terms both are "see through" transparent but gives the effect. Sort of like wearing sun glasses but it's on top of the base coat. Not my best description but hope it helps you understand.
