, Are you guys using any gasket sealer on the timing chain cover and water pump gaskets ? If so what you using ? ( Sm. Block ) Thanks, Kevin

Next question , What are you doing as far as the ends of the intake manifold ? any Gaskets or just sealer ? ( Wall of China )

I use a thin smear of RTV/Permatex.

Just enough to keep the gasket in place and seal a few little imperfections but the paper gasket does the work.

The thin smear also makes it a little easier to clean the gasket off in the future. Straight paper will bake on hard over the long haul and has to be evicted with more force.

Make sure the timing cover is flat. The stamped steel ones on big block often get bent from over tightening and force-ably removing them.

I use gasket sealer. It's made by permatex it's brown and it stinks.

Not unless there are imperfections/corrosion damage around the coolant holes. Otherwise, maybe a light smear around the coolant passages only.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

I use Permatex Copper Spray-A-Gasket just to hold them in place more than anything else. I very, very sparingly use RTV in some cases, but not here.

I sometimes use that brown permatex with the brush in the can. If I really have a tough one to seal, I use that Right Stuff in the tube. It expensive but is the best silicon type you can buy.

I have used pretty much all of the products mentioned in the above posts. I would add the following to your sealer arsenal

1. Gorilla Snot (aka 3M Trim Adhesive). Use it like a heavy duty version of Gasgacinch
2. The red High Tack spray can be useful but kind of ugly looking.
3. On metal gaskets like BB valley tubs I use Aluminum spray paint that has aluminum particles in it. works as good as copper coat without the ugly color.
4. Some people swear by some of the OEM sealers like Yamabond and Hondabond.

Notes about RTV (silicone sealers).
1. Use it very sparingly. When squeezed thin, globs will squeeze inward and break off. Eventually getting caught in oil pickups.
2. It does work great in place of thick gaskets to seal gaps like where Intake manifolds that don't use tub gaskets sit above the china walls. Example: SBMopar
3. The extreme high temp versions can actually be used instead of header gaskets.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

I like to use Permatex type 3 aviation gasket glue. It's impervious to just about everything-gas, oil, heat, water. Someone on here years ago recommended it for intake manifolds. I was always chasing vacuum leaks using only rtv silicon. Same with annoying oil leaks. Brushes on nice and smooth; gives you better control on gasket glue oozing out and contaminating oil pick-up.

I use RTV/silicone. Actual gasket sealer can't be used for stuff like that.

Perm type 3 came off fairly easy. Used some paint thinner, little elbow grease, very fine steel wool. For stubborn spots, go easy with a razor blade. For example, with intake manifold, took about 10-15 minutes, from laying out materials to throwing waste in trash.

Yes, sorry my bad. I did not use the correct wording . I meant RTV silicone , but said sealer. I know alot of the guys just used the RTV silicone, but didn't know if ideas have change any pertaining to the " End " gaskets. Thanks, Kevin

A very thin layer of Ultra Copper on the timing cover and teflon pipe dope on the wet bolts. On any of the long bolts that go through the timing cover into the block I like to use a thin layer of anti-seize on the shanks of the of the bolts. It can save a lot of headache down the road. For the china walls, I sue the same silicone and let it dry for at least two days before trimming the excess with a razor blade.

always a good idea to use anti-seize on steel bolts used to secure aluminum components, unless the holes are way bigger than the bolts.
still a good idea regardless.

I use Hylomar aviation sealant on intake. Stays relatively soft and isn't affected by fuel. I don't use the paper gaskets on either side of the valley pan but use gaskets everywhere else with Gaskacinch
