I would never use the SB Chevy racer trick of grinding on the starter to spin the motor over long enough to make oil pressure, NEVER I do prime all my new motors with a 1/2 drill motor and then spin the motor over with all the spark plugs out with oil pressure to ensure all rotating parts get oiled before starting On your deal I would pour some oil down the oil pickup while holding it and use the proper size Allen wrench to spin the pump over to suck that oil into the pump and let it squirt out the passage going to the main cap oil passage Don't forget to use a new gasket and torque both bolts down

To simplify things . You will need to pull the distributor anyway, so bolt up the pump, button up the pan, put oil in it and before you reinstall the distributor use a pump priming tool (length of 5/16 hex stock, spin it CW for a small block and it will prime the engine for you. The tool https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Mopar-P4286800-Priming-Shaft/dp/B000CIZZGYOnly reason to turn the engine over would be to get oil up to the rockers on a NEW build, no real need for what you are doing.

On a side note bolt up the pump to the cap barely snug then install the intermediate gear shaft then torque the pump bolts. this gives you dead on hex shaft alignment. Just my OCD talking!

this gives you dead on hex shaft alignment If the long snout on the pump doesn't give you proper alignment, the shaft sure as hell isn't. Not to mention torquing the pump to the block !!

you can tell immediately if it binds. if so, you need to find out where and why it's doing so. I've never had a stock pump bind. I've never had an aluminum pump that didn't bind !!!

Unless I missed it, no one has mentioned the tank based pre-lube setups yet. Allstar Performance Oil Pressure Primer Tanks ALL10535I picked up a used EL05 (which is a lot like this Melling Prelube Engine Oiler Tank Kits MPL-201 part) when a local machine shop was closing down. I haven't used it yet, although it appears to be literaly child's play easy! So my point being: once you have it all assembled and on the SB the pump to distributor drive is all aligned (and you do not want to touch it anymore) you could certainly take the tank based approach. I've used the hex-shaft before during on-stand engine assembly, and that was great. However, you are tied up spinning the drill and that means you are not turning the engine, and/or observing the oil-flow. For that reason I picked up this tank and the intent is to plumb-it-up (tank feeds into the block oil pressure sensor passage), turn the valve to start the flow and go inspecting things as the pressure drains out of the tank and eventually the oil flow stops. Heck, taking that a step further one could argue that this would be a good way to prep for the season's start as you take your ride out of the garage and get it road ready...I have never done that before, and the old 360 motor did not seem to suffer for it...but heck, an extra 1/2 hr. of care would seem to go a long way to get the oil up into all the necessary passages, so why not?

You could make one out of a garden sprayer for a heck of a lot less.

You could make one out of a garden sprayer for a heck of a lot less. Absolutely you could...I bought mine used for under $50 so it fit my budget perfectly, but as you said, this is not a complex setup: tank, couple of valves, etc...when I got mine, having looked it over I thought: "hmm...old propane tank would do just fine"!!! lol

you might consider some porting/deburring on the new pump. there are some major obstructions that you can improve on with minimal effort
