Is a sound bar needed? Not really, if you don't mind muffled, unclear audio. The same argument can be made about engine power. Are 700 horses needed? No, but they sure make for a fun ride. Get a sound bar, you'll be glad you did.

Required?
No, but it can be nice. Problem is finding one you like. Not like Best Buy has a bunch hooked up so you can listen to them and get an informed opinion. Lots of affordable ones on amazon with tons of reviews. I'd buy there off reviews over best buy. Reviews aren't your own ears. I grew up in the era of music being on AM radio. So no bass for me. Too many systems today over boost the bass and I don't like that. So some unknown's review of a sound system is useless for me. I did buy a Samsung sound bar for my Samsung TV off Amazon, figuring it'd be most compatible. Reviews were good. Not impressed with it's sound and it occasionally freaks out and both the TV and soundbar play, causing a slight echo effect.

As someone that started watching TV on a 19" black and white RCA portable, seeing the words "basic" and "65" TV" in the same sentence is a bit of chuckle... lol
50 odd years ago if I came home and found a 65" TV in the living room I would wonder how the Drive In Theater got there...
Kevin And remember how the local movie theater had one or two speakers either in the middle at the side or top of the screen and in mono or on the floor. Now some or most of those theater's sound systems feel like you're getting your clothes dry cleaned. I bought a sound bar system for every flat screen TV in the house and a go sound system with sub for the PC. Haven't found a phone, TV, PC or device that has a good speaker(s) that couldn't be improved or upgraded. Yes there are some TV with "good" speakers/sound but "compared to what"?,..... other TV speakers yes but not compared to a soundbar. with a sub.

I'm 35, hearing is decent, and I can tell you (much like many others in this post have mentioned) the quality of speakers in these TV's today is subpar at best. I bought some of the higher end Samsung TV's (not the Black Friday special or anything like that) in both 43 and 65 inch, and both TV's sound is again, subpar. Is a soundbar required? Absolutely not, but if you don't want to crank the built-in speakers up and blow them out trying to hear what you are watching, then yes, get a soundbar. Good luck!
