locating the original engine and/or transmission for your car? I'd like to find the original 340 and 4-speed transmission for my car if possible but other than posting an ad in the lost and found I don't know where to look. Also, I have no idea where my car was originally from.

I found the original 383 block for my 69 Superbee. I feel it was just plain luck, the person I got the car from mentioned the name of a guy I knew and said that who I believe was the second owner looked at the car when it was for sale a few years earlier and said that he still had the original engine from when he pulled it to swap it for a 440 . 25 bucks for a crusty block that was sitting on a piece of cardboard in a dirt floor basement.

You need to trace back owners , can you get a hold of whom you got it from and go back from there ?

running up my post count some more .

I bought the car 15 years ago and didn't keep any of the contact information on the seller. At the time, I didn't care about it not being numbers matching but as time has passed, I kind of wish it was.

It can be very difficult. Even just a few years after we bought our GTS the guy we bought it from could not remember who had done the engine work. I know it was done in the San Jose area and there is (or was) a 340 out there that matches our car, but I've never seen it. I do have a '68 340 now that probably matches a car sold new here in Fresno (I know of a couple).

Many years ago a good friend had an original numbers matching 340 4 spd swinger. Another 69 383 4 spd GTS that was a little crusty came up for sale. Louie purchased the GTS because he wanted the 383. Swapped out both engines and sold the GTS with the numbers matching 340 from the swinger. I guess you could say that two cars were ruined for the sake of wanting more power but that's what we did back then. Today who knows where either ended up. Just keep asking and looking cause you never know it's like buying lottery tickets.

You have to play detective and exhaust every lead you can.

The problem is I don't have any leads at all. I don't know who any of the previous owner's were or where the car originally was sold when new. At this point I guess all I can do is post in the lost and found. shruggy

Is there a way to figure out which dealer the car was shipped to when new?

Been looking for the 340 out of my 69 GTS convertible since 1995, only came close. I think the problem is that I bought the car in Indianapolis, and Indy Cylinder Head bought up all the 340's they could put their hands on in the 80's and 90's and made them into race engines, so I am sure mine got blowed up somewhere along the line... frown 306021 is still out there hopefully... scope

Just a long shot, but try punching in your VIN on Google. The car may have been mentioned online in an ad or on a forum.

Talk to your DMV. Some states will send an inquiry to the previous owner of record on your behalf. If your state does this, at least you have an option. No guarantees, even if the DMV sends a letter, the previous owner is under no obligation to reply. And as the cars age, so do the owners, many are not with us any more. But it may be another option to consider.

Posting the number your looking for in the form of a looking for original XXX engine and XXX trans for year, make, and Vin stampings might just flush it out. Example: i have a 340 in my 38 Ford that I pulled out of a 72 340 4spd cuda. The car I pulled it from was restored and in Morgan hill ca. back in 1994. I'm not even sure the motor was original to that car but the next time I have it on the rack I'm going to get the numbers and google them to see if anyone's looking for it. My point is if you added the numbers to this post and some one google's it, it should pop up, Long shot but when looking for a needle in a haystack up beer

I am an eternal optimist on this subject. The odds of a successful reunion are 50/50......... beer

Think about it....... either you will, or you will not!

If you do not try, then the odds are very slim.

I have quite a bit of experience in this area. Since starting The Challenger T/A Registry over two decades ago, the overall endeavor started to include AAR Cuda's.

Then it evolved again to include ALL 1970 Hamtramck built cars.

Another evolution was started for the 1970 LA built cars.

In my lifetime at this point I have personally either mailed out or personally delivered broadcast sheets, other related paperwork 442 items so far.

There was also a 340 block for a 1972 Road Runner. I left it with the owner's wife because he was at work, but that was well before I started any registries.

I have not counted what I call 'assists'. Hundreds of people have sent in paper items & fender tags for cars they have found, but of course no one is going to send in an engine or transmission. But there have been a lot of registry members that I have been able to put in touch with the person that had reported one, the other, or both for their car.

On several of those occasions, successful deals were made.

A year or two ago, three T/As got their original engines back in one month!

It always feels great when it happens. boogie

Best of luck with your search. up

My buddy Eric (gts340swinger) just bought a collection of parts that had a Hemi block included. He found the owner of the car and reunited the block! That is what's is all about... up

I was at a tiny show in Irondequoit NY and a gentleman named John approached me about my vin and wanted to snap a photo .. several weeks passed and John called me on Fathers Day in June 19 and said indeed he had my matching numbers engine ..
the engine was about 60 miles away from where I bought car.

Sometimes you get lucky. Many years ago a good friend bought a 64 dual quad 409 Impala that he remembered from his youth. The engine was long gone and had been replaced with a 283. We hunted for a correct engine for a year. We did not even consider the possibility of finding the original engine. Some one told us about seeing a 409 at a farm about 25 miles away. We went to the farm and asked about it. The farmer said we could have it and told us where to find it. We walked clear back to the back of the farm and found a 409 block sitting on top of a pile of gravel. The heads were on the back seat of a junk car and the dual quad intake and air cleaner were in the trunk beside a box of rods, pistons and assorted small parts. The farmer carried the block and heads with his backhoe and we carried the rest by hand during a thunder storm, walking through the muck. Yes, we were young and dumb. After we got it home and cleaned up we started wondering we're this engine came from because all the numbers looked right and there were very few around back in the day. My friend called the farmer and asked if he knew were it came from. Turned out he got it from the original owner of my friends car,. Amazingly all of the parts cleaned up well enough to do a stock bore rebuild on it and he drove that car for several years.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.
