Ok so im a long ways off from building my 340 but i was wondering how a tunnel ram would do with two holley 450s, ive always loved the look and was wondering how it would perform. Plus i can get 2 450 holleys for basically a song. So is a tunnel ram great on performance or should i stick to a run-of-the-mill style intake?

Im not too familiar with this as the 340 will be the first motor ill be building so i thought id ask.

Thanks, Chris.

If it's a stout small block I would run a tunnel ram no hesitation.
Tunnel rams aren't strictly for top end drag cars, they are VERY streetable.

I've owned dozens of tunnel ram 2x4bbl street cars and trucks.

I drove a work truck for years with a tunnel ram, stock converter, mild cam (268 Comp cam) and it had TONS of torque and awesome drivability.

Well i plan on doin a very stout buildup, Its probally just going to be .30 over and i plan on opening up the "J" heads a good bit, and im thinking of 10-1 comp and im unsure on the cam. How well will the stock crank hold up? the stock rods looked a little rusty so ill end up waiting longer and getting an H beam or something, i have alot of research to do but id love to run a tunnel and slotted mags.
Any tips on what a good cam would be?

That truck looks awesome, bet it suprised alot of people

I'm not so sure the 450 Holleys work that great. You might want to run 600s.

Ran an M1 TR and two 770 CFM (275 HP 327 carbs IIRC) on a low CR 383 w/ 4.10s and a loose convertor; ran well.

Until the #6 rod bearing spun...

My .02: go for it!

Very well. Light pistons & balance it.

I run a pair of holley 1850's 650 vac sec. on my 440. It is very streetable, The only negative is I am always concerned about taking the car out in iffy weather.

It sucks to clean the engine compartment after when it rains while driving.

Go for it! I just put my wieand track ram on my 426 Street wedge with two 650 eddies. Runs good except a slight lean spot off idle (working on it). Does funny car style burn outs now!

two 600s on a 340? i thought that would be a little much, the 450s are pretty tempting since i need one for my 273 right now. Well im still a long ways off from this motor but i think ill try the 450s and if tey dont perform the best ill find a set of 600s

I would definitely go with the 450's over 600's on a 340. Just make sure you take the time to research on how to set up carbs for dual carb use. You don't want to just throw them on without taking the time to understand how to tune em.

I bought two new 450`s from Summit and I never could get them to work well on my 360 with a tunnel ram. I switched to two 390 cfm carbs and it runs much much better.

The problem with 450's is they are mechanical secondary but only have acc pumps on the primary side, you have to lean into them or you get a lean spot.

2 1850's will work, and 2 500 -barrels work but look kinda goofy.
