Does the 4spd AOD (A518, non lock up converter) use same speedo gear as 727 ?? Or is it totally different ?? Need to correct my speedo . . .

Thanks,

M

some do and some don't. my 91 has the long gear and some later ones that the short gear. the 91 was slow by 8 mph with a 33 toth gear. i figured it needed a 28.5 toot but only had a 27 tooth. put it in and now it is 4 mph too fast. i need the 28/29 tooth. my 91 id 518 od without lockup.

Thanks for the info . . . I am thinking my speedo is slow by 6-8mph, but I haven't pulled the gear out to see what is in there . . .

i put together a sb d150. tbi 318, 518od. the truck i took the stuff out of had 3.55 gears, but this truck has 2.71 gears. rather than going thru the formulas on the net i found a different formula. my speedo was reading 57 when i was doing 65. if you divide the 65 into 57, it gives a percentage ratio of .876. multiply that times the teeth on current gear should tell you what toothed gear you need. .876x33=28.93. all i had was a 27. i need a 28/29. got them coming.

I thought that sometime in the late 70's they went to a totally different plastic housing and gear? I know I had a '79 727 that had a completely different setup and cable end. The earlier style gear and housings fit fine though in it's place.

the rear drive ny, diplomats and some of that body style had a different setup than the ones we are used to. cable just went in thru hosing and i think it was hair pin clipped. been too many beers ago.

I'm pretty sure the different housing types can be swapped between transmissions. Cable is different though. I found a an a500 in a late 80's Dakota with cruise control. The speedometer gear housing in it used the old style gear and has a VSS built into it. I've used that same housing on three different transmissions since then with the latest being an a518 from 1994.

there are three different style speedo drives in the muscle car era. The early one, like my 65 Cuda has includes the pinion adapter as part of the speedometer cable, the next newer style uses a larger diameter adapter and a screw on cable, the last style also uses a different large style adapter with the bayonet style cable attachment. The last two can swap AS AN ASSEMBLY pinion, adapter and cable.

Have a 91 518 and a early 90's 500 and they both use the same gear and housing as the 66-up transmissions. They are RH units. I'm not sure about the later RE units.

That is a 1965 and older gear. 1966-1993 is the same gear and housing.

The later pinion resembles the '62-'65 (bottom pic) but is different.

My 90's A518, A500 and Getrac 360 as well as my 1987 833OD all take the long shaft. Lower one shown in your pic.

i have a cable with a plastic housing/gear assembly like shown in the "third" link that came from a factory crate E58 360/727 i acquired new in 1978.
i swapped the plastic housing out to use an older, long style, gear and aluminum housing along with the corresponding screw on cable. it worked perfectly.
