I have ran Mickey Thompson drag radials on the Cuda for quite a few years. But the last couple of sets have been bad out of round. Now that is not real bad at the track, but on the street, it is really uncomfortable. And this year the car will see a lot more street time, than track time. The MTs hook okay, but they are egg shaped and no amount of weights can help that.

It is now time for a new pair of 275/60-15s and I haven't bought a set in 3 years. So have the MTs gotten any better? How about the Hoosiers? Any other brands that hook like the MTs, but are round?

Thank you!

I had a couple of sets of MT drag radials on the Duster and they were both egg shaped. Not sure if the tires are just poorly made, or if it had to do with the fact that the car sat a lot.

It has been suggested to me that my Mickeys are egg shaped because the car does sit a lot. But they were that way when I mounted them. I was told that they would get in shape after a bit of driving. eyes They didn't.

I use the ET Street Pro. No issues with out of round here.

I will say they DO NOT like to be balanced the way typical tires do. Leave the weights off!

Ditto...I run the Pros and don't balance them and have no issues at 135 mph.

I've never used them, but I have a friend that uses a loves the M&H drag radials. He bought them a few years ago for Drag Week when you couldn't find any M/T radials anywhere.

Would that friend be Ray? Sounds like something he told me a couple of years ago. I've seen vids of some people going pretty quick on the M&H, but have no personal or close second-hand experience.

---------------------------

When people are referring to M/T, please remember they currently have three 275/60R15 offerings:
- ET Street S/S, which is DOT legal and supposed to be like the original ET Street construction, only w/ additional grooves
- ET Street R, which is DOT legal and built more like the ET Street Pro, only "just enough"grooves that M/T still promotes it as a street-legal option
- ET Street Pro, which is not DOT legal for highway although some people run them on the street like GY3 does

The original and the S/S have steel belts in their construction. The R and the Pro do not, which is why their sidewalls behave differently (and likely part of why they hook better w/ what's supposed to be the same compound).

The original ET Streets on my old car never had any balancing or out-of-round issues and were smooth up to 125+ MPH. The ET Street S/S on my 1320 (305/40R18, not 275/60R15) do act a bit "funny" at maybe 90+; not sure if they need to be rebalanced due to possibly spinning on the rims after some track time, or and indication that they don't run true that's showing up on the big end. It's not scary, but it's there... feels like hitting a bumpy section of the track when it starts doing it.

---------------------------

I don't know what the Nitto NT555RII would do on my old car, although it would probably be "OK" on my 1320. From a few reviews I've seen, they sound like the work decently when new, but get baked from repeated heat cycles and don't grip as well even when there's still a lot of tread on them. The do make a 275/60R15, but I don't know anyone personally that runs that size.

shruggy

I spoke to MT tech this morning. 'Mark' beat around the bush some, but after a few minutes, "yes, there are some tires that aren't as round as we would like" and that they would warranty them if out of round. But, he says that there are very few out of rounds. Well, I have 2 now, and have had ones in the past, too. One thing he said that was new information to me was that 1% of the tire's weight was the acceptable limit for balance weights. First I have heard that and is something that I will keep in mind in the future.

I guess that I will go with the Mickeys again. If they are round, hurray! If not, we'll see how good their customer service really is. Since the car will see mostly street time, I plan to go with the S/S tire this time.

McCormack Racing on ebag seems to have the best price that I can find and they claim to have them in stock. I'll find out tomorrow. $490 a pair shipped. Any better deals out there?

Thanks for the help, guys. I appreciate it.

Oh, and one last question; anyone use the 'beads' in their DRs rather than weights? Are you happy with the results?

Bought my last 2 sets of Mickey Thompson tires from McCormack. up

Go directly to their website, instead of eBarf. Sign up for their "club" program and it'll save you a couple bucks more than buying on eBarf.

I run Nitto 555R 275/60-15's. They work very well on the street, but they only work well between a somewhat narrow temperature range. Too hot gets them greasy feeling, too cool and they spin almost as bad as a Radial T/A. They are also speed rated to 186 MPH.

1970 Plymouth 'Cuda #'s 440-6(block in storage)currently 493" 6 pack, Shaker, 5 speed Passon, 4.10's
1968 Plymouth Barracuda Convertible 408 Magnum EFI with 4 speed automatic overdrive, 3800 stall lock-up converter and 4.30's (closest thing to an automatic 5 speed going)
