Looks like you are 0.007 out. Move it back 7 so the the +7 goes to zero and the -7 goes to zero.

Agreed. If this is the first time you've done this, pull the stock dowel pins and just snug the bell up on the block. That way you can shift the bell around and get a feel for how it responds.

Loosen the bolts and hit the +7 side with a rubber mallet. Tighten the bolts and check again. if you get all readings under .007 leave things alone.

.007 + or - ? or did you mean .007 total ?

He currently is .014 out total. Installing .007 offset pins and moving the housing to the left, should get him in almost perfect alignment. Most recommend being within .004 - .005 total.

BTW if any of you think this is a b--ch try dialing in a cast iron torqueflite converter. And If I remember correctly their spec is .003 total beer

Don't forget to also verify that the pad the transmission bolts to on the face of the bellhousing is square with the crank centerline, so that the transmission and the crankshaft are on the same centerline and not cocked in relation to each other.

Once you get the opening of the bellhousing centered in relation to the centerline of the crank, you can securely bolt the bellhousing down and drill to small holes for two locator dowels to make lining it back up in the future easier.

X2. The Robbmc dowels are the correct size. Other aftermarket dowels say Mopar but are actually Ford size and fit way to tight. hammer. But the Robbmc dowels. They are pricey but well worth it,

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Yessir one does. I found it interesting/ "inFURYating" that the procedure is at the back of the engine section in the FSM rather than the trans section. DAMHIK.

X3 on the mopar vs Ford dowels. Do NOT use Ford ones, and the MR Gasket ones which are labeled for Mopar and Ford are indeed Ford ones. The Robbmc dowels are the way to go: great product.

Thanks everyone, I am new to posting and trying to figure out how to answer, I started with stock pins and found it was out -.026 and have installed Robb mc pins .014 offset and the pic of the reading is where it currently sits I think I am reading the dial correctly at 3 o clock its on the 7th mark before zero on my my dial whiich I would think is negative then at 9 o clock its the 7th mark past zero which I think is positive, this is the first time I have done anything like this and I am not sure if the pins need to both point in the same direction, the book says .008 max runout I know I am unclear what this number is, the help here is greatly appreciated bare with me on trying to figure how to respond to everyone

If you are doing the job by yourself it can be difficult to keep track of the numbers. I started to use my phone to shoot a video of the dial indicator while I slowly turned the crankshaft from the front. Then I can review the video and see exactly what is happening.

I also found that I needed to build a small tool to hold the indicator to the crankshaft flange

The first tool was too flimsy to give me accurate results so I ended up building a second version which was much stronger.

Yeah you really need a solid mount to get repeatable results. Had this one made by another member about 15 years ago and it works great.

So moving the housing .0035 to the left should get it well within tolerance?
