Was going to sell a 3.54 Dana I had left over and not re-used.

Was going to pack for a buyer and under closer inspection I noticed
two gears had fissures that at first I thought were damage from the previous use.

After looking more closely, it seems to me they look more like casting flaws.

What are your takes on this ring gear, scrap or maybe usable for moderate street use??

Thanks,

Joe

PS., no other signs of any debris marks or damage anywhere else.

You have a nice boat anchor there and I would never put that in a car either.

Cracked - junk. Dings, not in the contact area - die grind the sharp edges smooth and use. Would not sell to someone. Use it, give it away to someone willing to use it or scrap.

Picture is hard to see. Looks like a crack on the one tooth which would disqualify it from being trusted.

Used gear that is not rare may not be worth fooling with. Something expensive or not easily replaced, I would fix it if I needed to use it, depending on the crack..

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

I won't sell something that I wouldn't trust myself. I'd make a clock out of that.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Ring and pinion gears, as well as all other automotive tranny and rear end gears that I know of are not cast or poured into a mold, they are drop forged is what I have been told by several major vendors of them scope
As far as that pinion gear teeth, that is not a casting flaw tsk It is, are, hurt from abuse, don't use or sell it twocents

JB and some carefully applied flat black. Then sell them to someone you don't like, might even fog the R&P and claim NOS
