From the spot welds, that looks like a factory quarter panel.
I also see some marks/gouges just off the flat gasket rail.
Is it possible the VIN stamp missed the target and hit that rolled corner ?
If anyone cares in the future, it's really not that hard to prove a factory-original quarter panel.
Sounds like the car will be in good hands, enjoy that & take pride in it.

On my '65 Coronet the VIN number is on the right side of the car so Mopar must have changed the location over time. I think it was on the right side on my Duster also.

This , you are looking in the wrong spot , the number is under the weatherstrip itself , you should be able to feel where the number was stamped from the underside.

running up my post count some more .

What caused something like this to happen? I couldn't even imagine telling someone whose car I was judging that they had to pull up the weatherstripping AND scrape off the paint to check a number ?

Obviously you have never shown a car at this level of judging. The pic looks like O.E. Judging from many years ago. If you are trying to score within 90% of a 2000 point judging sheet to get a gold you are willing to scrape a little paint that is hidden under the weather stripping. Not sure who was Judging this car and would have made such a stupid mistake to say the number was on the passenger side. But in the end the correct placement was identified. What did your friends A12 score? Gold (90)%, Silver (80%), or Bronze (70%) ?
