My column was apart in the Demon (Tuff wheel) for ignition switch and turn signal switch replacement. The column is currently lowered.
Went to button everything up and the can won't go back on straight? It goes almost metal to metal at the 12 o'clock position.
I checked and the master spline is lined up correctly. I put it on/off three times and the gap at the top almost touches and a larger gap at the 6 0'clock position. I tried tightening the nut by wrench, then impact and same result.
Should be an easy install. What could I be doing or what could be out of whack?

On most early columns the lower part is not supported by a bearing which means the base has to be correctly positioned to position angle of the shaft inside the column.

If the column is hanging loose then more than likely the column and shaft are not centered on each other.

Also make sure the snap ring at the top of the column above the bearing is correctly seated in the groove. If it slips out the shaft will drop into the column causing it to rub.

Copy that. Thank you! I'm going to wait until I get the dash / dash frame back in and then I can re check everything before making the next attempt.
