I am working on a 1973 727 trans and had to replace the reaction shaft bushing. After I installed the new bushing the input shaft will not fit into it as it is too tight. I removed and replaced it again just in case I tweaked it on install. The Shaft still does not fit. Do these need to be honed after install? Or are the new bushings (Federal-Mogul) not the right size. Bushing fits over the shaft ok with free play before install. Any help appreciated.

The only Carbs I care about are under the hood!

Compare the diameter of the input shaft against the installed bushing.

Input should be a couple thousands smaller. Bushings “shrink” once pressed in their bore.

The aftermarket bushings are notoriously undersized, I bore them to size on a lathe. The factory installation tool might have sized them on installation.

I bought the Miller bushing driver set in 1978. The first reaction shaft bushing I replaced (factory bushing), was too tight, just like you’re experiencing. I avoided them until last fall, when I had to replace one for a friend. It fit perfectly. (Ancient TransStar) I’ve never read any mention of this in any TSB.

Service bushings should never have to be sized. The only exception I am aware of is burnishing the intermediates shaft bushing.

Real good possibility your driver is not setting on the steel backing of the bushing.
Lightly chamfer the leading edge of the bushing and see if that helps.

No issues with the driver. I measured another input shaft and support bore and they were the same as the one I am assembling. I suspected it was the Bushings not being correct diameter. Now where to find bushings that fit correctly.

How much smaller is the bushing than the input shaft?

A few thousands can easily be removed with a brake cylinder hone.

Wrong drivers and junk bushings are the problem.
