I've read of rebuilding these truck engines into bigger street engines, but does anyone have any experience going the other way? Street 440 to remotor a truck?

I have put several "street" 440,s in different trucks over the years. Is this going to be a work truck, as in towing or hauling or is it going to be a hot rod street truck? Your camshaft selection should be suited to your use. For instance you wouldn't want a big cam in a work truck, you would want a cam meant to provide low end torque. I have a pickup with a 440 and an RV cam in it. Makes lots of low end power, perfect for what I use it for. I also have another pickup with a 440 that has a little more compression and a bigger cam. Really fun to drive!

You also want to be sure the 440 you are installing doesn't have a cast crank, like the later model 440s had. Finding a cast crank flywheel for your 2 ton truck could be a major undertaking.

In general, it's a bolt-in swap to put a 440 in where a 361 or 413 used to be in a truck. As mentioned, if your truck has a manual transmission, you need to make sure the 440 you put in has a crankshaft that is drilled for a manual transmission pilot bearing/bushing + you need to make sure there's a flywheel/clutch/bellhousing setup that works in your application. Automatics don't have those issues for the most part.

this is my truck for hauling seed for planting, about 18,000 lbs at at time, so yes, we put a big cam in it, and bored the end of the crank for a pilot bushing. Since the block is the same, the bell housing bolts right up, but the flywheel off my old 361 (rings finally failed) has bad surface cracks. I'm searching for a 15", 158 tooth flywheel to replace it. The front end is challenging too, as the 361 truck motor and 5 bolt water pump positioned the fan blade 5" higher than the normal 4 bolt water pump housings. I'm thinking of putting an electric pump on a 4 bolt housing and building a bracket for a fan pulley that would put the fan blade up to match the radiator. Looks like moving the radiator down would not be a good option. Thoughts?

You can use the heads, 5 bolt water pump, and accessories from a 413 with the industrial set up to keep the same water pump to radiator relationship. I am building a 440 bottom end with all 413 top end for an RV application. 413 heads mentioned are closed chambered and combined with 440 six pack bottom end can be set up for quench and 9 to 1 compression. Heads also have sodium filled exhaust valves and cooling direct from the water pump to the heads. Best combo I have been able to come up with on the cheap for a heavy duty application.

If you haven't bought a cam already Mike Jones has a custom grind specifically for this application.

If you decide to scrap the 5 bolt pump set up let me know I would buy the water pump from you.

If you want more info on a heavy duty 440, look up posts by wyrmrider on for a bodies, for b bodies, and speed talk.

The 440 core that I had rebuilt to go in this truck came from a 76 New Yorker, stock except for the cam. My industrial heads are from a 361-4, one of the last ones probably as it was factory in a 1975 truck. What all needs to be done to these 361 industrial heads to go on the 440 block?
