I was researching undercoating options last week and was comparing RestoRick's undercoating with 3m body shutz. I didn't complete the order form on RestoRick's website but I recieved an invoice anyway. laugh2 Looks like I'll order it from him...it's less expensive then the 3m stuff anyway.

What I was curious about is how you go about spraying it. The 3m body shutz comes in 1 quart containers that screw on to the applicator gun. RestoRick's stuff comes in a gallon container. Does the shutz gun screw to the gallon can or do you have to transfer it to another container to spray it?

I saw this gun listed in an old Moparts thread. This is what I'll probably buy to spray it.

I used an undercoat gun like you're looking at.
IIRC - it was 10 years ago - I think I transferred from the gallon can to the gun's can.
You might also be able to use a hose from the gallon to the gun.
Rick's stuff was better than anything else I tried, but getting the factory-looking thickness & texture seemed to require a lot of material and a couple applications.
Messy as hell, as all that stuff is; mask or cover everything around the area you're working on, even several feet away.

Transfer Resto Ricks undercoating to the smaller gun reservoir. I then drill out the gun nozzle to a larger diameter. Then to get the build up like the factory I shoot a heavy coat and then let it dry over night or so then come back and do it again. If you keep building it up on the first pass it will flow out as it cures and you won't get the build up. Also a minimum of 4 beers are needed to get into the factory worker's state of mind.

The gun listed in the link doesn't show an extra reservoir. That's why I was confused. So it looks like I'll have to come up with some sort of reservoir to pour the undercoating in. I do have one of those cheap non-gravity paint guns that's never been used. Maybe that reservoir will work?

most auto body supply stores should be able to sell you a new empty can. I have bought them from my paint jobber ABS here in Sioux falls SD absdelivers.com

Lots of truth to this. There is a reason most painters, including myself, drink or smoke weed.

waaay back in the mid 70's, a buddy of mine and i "started" the trend of painting EVERYTHING body color.
when i would get a car in at my junkyard that was good enough to fix and flip, i would contact my buddy, and he would round up all his leftover paint from his body shop. mix it all up until we got the neat-o color we wanted, then spray away after masking the windows and lights. no chrome for us ! laugh2
each car we did that way sold FAST !
i don't know if it was the colors we came up with, or the price we put on the car. we also included a pint or so [or what ever was left of the "custom" mix] for touch up. good luck matching up the color. biggrin
at least we take credit for "giving" the manufactures "our" idea.

I believe Eastwood sells the gun/reservoir combination. I like the idea mentioned about hogging out the nozzle. I was a little disappointed with the results I got but I also only did one car so there wasn't much practice or history to go by.

Any idea on the size to increase it to?

Sorta off topic, but when RestoRicks product dries, is it tacky or does it dry hard and solid?

It dries hard and solid..

On a related topic, Undercoating would have been done after fuel line and brake lines were installed, but before the drivetrain, correct?
I’ve had undercoating on the fuel and brake lines, on the gas tank and exhaust shields, upstop bumpers for the axle and is on the wiring for the front side marker lights, but it is not on the drivetrain components or the K frame.
Is that accurate?

Yup - seems to have been done before the "body drop" onto the drivetrain & K.
Notice the masking @ ft suspension attachment areas, they only have primer & overspray there.
