Having a connection issue with my Roku, seems to be a (now) common problem with no simple solution.

I spent w-a-y too much time on the phone with xfinity and Roku today and got no where with either, so I thought I'd throw this out to you fine people before I go at them again.

Internet/wifi is provided by xfinity. I have 6 other items in my apt that are connected to the wifi with no issues.

As of 7:30 PM Wednesday night, Roku will no longer connect to my Wifi. I was right in the middle of watching something when POOF gone! eek

It's done this before but I've always been able to reconnect. work

Weird thing (to me) was that the Roku wouldn't even find my WIFI when I'd run a scan. I'm in an apt, it would find everyone around me, but not mine. confused

Went and bought a new one (express 4K+), and this new one finds my WiFi but still won't connect. flame

Xfinity blames Roku, Roku blames Xfinity, you know the drill. Tried different settings, nothing makes a difference.

Any suggestions? help

(as an aside, been using Roku for almost 10 yrs and this is the first major issue I've had with them)

Disconnect power to everything. Wait a few minutes....reboot the modem. Reboot your router. Confirm you have internet connection. Your Roku will likely reconnect and work as designed. All of those devices have an IP address that will re-establish on a reboot

I'm no genius (as you've probably concluded), but unplug the power from the back side of the ROKU box, plug it back in and let it reset. I have a ROKU also and when something like that happens to me, that usually cures it. I hope it's that simple...

Yes YES YES. This is a typical issue with streaming TV tech. Disconnect power for 10-20 seconds from everything but ESPECIALLY your modem. I have 3 Roku devices in my home and occasionally one- just one will no longer connect.....until I unplug my modem for a slow count to ten then plug back in.

It might have saved time had I mentioned I tried disconnecting power NUMEROUS times to no avail. (sorry guys blush ).

Matter of fact, I unplugged everything before I went to bed last night and plugged everything in this morning, no different.

I've tried everything xfinity suggested, I've tried everything roku suggested, and nothing. I'm a little pissed right now.

Thanks guys.

Anybody wanna buy two rokus?

This is what I keep getting.........

John, have you tried pressing the connect button on your router when trying to connect? Sometimes it's the only way I can get my HP printer hooked up.

so I don't use wireless much on my roku. I do when we take it with us traveling.
normally it makes me use my phone to log into the roku and set up the wifi and password.
is that what you are doing or is there some new onscreen thing that lets you setup wifi for yours?

is the new one also not able to see your router?
do you know if you have 5 ghz or 2.4 ghz?

for your old devices, have you tried to forget your wifi connection and do a search again?
or you could load an app on your phone to sniff wifi connections.

if your old devices still remember the wifi and say you lost the broadcast ssd, they would still connect.
the roku might be stupid and not able to find it because it isn't broadcasting the ssd.
There may be a setting to connect even if you don't see the ssd. but I am not sure on a roku.

lastly, you might check your wifi settings to ensure it is broadcasting the ssd, and that the name is still correct.

Well, I got it working, but I'm still not convinced its fixed because I don't understand why what I did made a difference.

I updated my password for xfinity. That's all I did.

I changed it on xfinity, waited a moment, then tried Roku again and this time it worked. confused

Yes, I was entering my old password correctly

Security issue with old password? shruggy I dunno.

Thanks for the help guys.

And to answer Andrew, I was told the Roku works off of the 2.4ghz wifi, and the wifi mode needs to be set to 802.11 b,g,n . Mine was originally at 802.11 g.n . This was one of the first things I tried at the recommendation of Roku. It is still set at 'b.g.n' , I haven't changed it back.

I don't know how technical you are.
b,g, n are the different standards / speeds.
they are backwards compatible, but the issue is the wifi will drop to the speed of the slowest item on the network to be compatible.
most people don't have anything as old as b, but if you do, it drops your speed to that level.

password to xfinity should be different than your password for wifi access. and it shouldn't affect if you can see your wifi ssd.

Thank you Andrew, the b.g.n. makes sense now.

As for the password........ shruggy While troubleshooting this problem, I was accessing my xfinity on my phone. This morning I pulled up my xfinity account on my PC and got a warning from windows about needing to change my password, which I did. Like you said, it shouldn't affect logging into wifi, but since nothing else worked, I tried this new password on the roku and it seems to have worked. Seems to. eyes
