The more recent black "rubber" valve cover gaskets suck especially the fel pro ones. I wish they still had the old orange rubber ones
The black fel pros are too hard and don't have any "give"
Usually with valve cover gaskets I go snug plus 1/4 turn

I did a better inspection of the gaskets and it looks like only one of the corners on the driver side covers is leaking... I wiped it clean and tightened that one corner about 5 more inch lbs and it's leaking alot less! It's bending but I think I should be able to tighten it a little more and that should take care of the leak! If I have any issues with it after this I'm definitely getting load spreaders and studs... Better distribution and more torque!

They are pretty hard! I think these type would work well if I had studs and load spreaders or different, more solid valve covers...
As hard as they are and with my setup being the stamped covers and bolts, I can't get enough torque on the covers before they deform... Maybe if I had done rtv on both sides but the idea was to be able to reuse them...

my old mind and cobwebs are at it again.
way back somewhere in time, i remember a statement saying the bolt holes on the heads were NOT at a 90 degree angle to the sealing surface.
has anyone else heard that ?
i can't remember if that was brought up during a cast valve cover discussion or a gasket sealing discussion.
regardless, if the tin cover is deforming, sealing is going to go away, and more torque applied is going to make it worse.
it is harder to get an "as cast" surface to seal than it is to seal a machined surface.

On an LA they aren't at a 90, I can't remember about the B/RB though. Been about 30 years since I fooled with those.

I did notice the angle of the holes slightly "off" when I chased the threads... I wasn't sure though but now that you mention it...

I got the bolts on there at 80 inch lbs now and I'm not going to go tighter! Like I said, if I have to do it over or whenever I do, I'll get studs and load spreaders. That should take care of it!

Mopar sells a gasket like the Cometics that sniper posted. They are the cats meow and are reusable many, many times. I've been using the same set for over twenty years on my race cars and now my truck.

Wow... Next time I'll invest in some of those!
I did the valve covers on a 98' Plymouth Grand Voyager and found some rubber one's from felpro that are just like the ones posted by sniper. They were blue rubber and a thin metal strip in the middle. They were very similar but probably don't last as long as the "red" one's.
