On the "advice of their lawyers" no doubt. 100% correct. Cheaper to crush them than risk lawsuits from subsequent owners. A few years back a car dealers inventory was flooded during a storm. The MFR. Ford came in and scrapped everyone of them. And these were brand new cars ready for delivery. There was some talk of donating them to tech schools but that too was squashed in case one got out there somehow. All due to our litigious society

^^^ Yup, by the time it was over GM had the '73 model year changeover coming, with the battering-ram bumpers. I've seen a photo of F-bodies (Camaro & Firebird) on an empty assy line.
Bottom line on the current deal is that somebody calculates anticipated losses from warranty, customer displeasure, and legal costs. With all the electronics & computers in modern cars, there's no way they want those cars out there, and the bottom-line repair costs are likely huge. Too bad they can't go to vo-tech schools, but as stated I'm sure GM doesn't want one getting out on the road.

At times, they will sell the vehicles to a big salvage vendor like LKQ Corp. In return, LKQ Corp must document that they destroyed the vehicles, i.e., cut them up for parts. I suppose they could've done that here, but chose not to.
I've been at LKQ Corp's largest yard several times (Akron, OH), and watched them shoot video of their employees cutting up brand new cars that had been damaged in transit. Some of the vehicles weren't even damaged, but the OEM scrapped the entire load anyway. I was there once while the scrapped 3 brand new WS6 Trans Ams. GM had used these 3 as test cars for a differently designed rear seat. LKQ had to video themselves removing the rear seats, boxing them up, and shipping them back to GM, and then had to video themselves cutting up the cars. I had a training class of new hires with me, and they were amazed at watching these guys go to work with a plasma cutter on a brand new car.
Saw them scrap a train load of VW's after a few train cars derailed. Saw the same thing with a train load of Chryslers, too...a few hundred cars from each incident, some damaged, some not, all chopped up. Watched them cut up some magazine test cars, too.
Earning every penny of that moderator paycheck.
