For those that want to run 1/2 inch studs, reaching the best clamp load is a must. Check on final torque specs and talk to experts about what lube if any to use. Think of them like rod bolts, because they are affected the same way. Thread friction is a large part of the torque spec. Get that wrong and clamp load will be off, allowing twisting forces to break the studs.

Part of the issue is the amount of surface area between the wheel and rotor. If it's minimal, it takes way more clamping force to keep from bending the studs. Factory steel wheels have the least contact.

Good luck.

I have a buddy with a very similar combination. Dead hooks it and controls the 60s in the bellhousing. Car is nearly trouble free at this point. I know what he's gone through with that and helped fix a lot of it.

I think the shear force of a 8 D finish nail is somewhere in the 5000 pound range, so.. Of course my friends 63 Polara with one of those aftermarket K-frames sheared off a 3/4 grade 8 bolt on the lca just backing-hard turning out of his garage, might have been just loose, the maker did make a brace to get double clamping to fix the issue. Grade 5 is a better stud-bolt to use on axels. I also think the type of wheel used has a lot do with strength, thick (Pro Star type vs thin (Centerline, Borgart), shorter the stud the stronger or less apt to bend over.

When I first switched to 5/8" studs, I asked around about drilling and tapping my axles myself. EVERYONE said send them back to the manufacturer to have it done. So back to Moser they went. Biggest problem was finding a box to ship them in. I've kept a couple of axle boxes in storage since then, lol. Kind of like header boxes. Don't think about it until you need one, then it's a PITA.

5/8" studs makes changing tires/wheels so much easier too.

I changed because all the cool kids did it…. Honestly it was just one of those things we looked at and thought of as a very good safety upgrade as we entered the mid 9 zone. Pretty cheap protection considering the catastrophic damage that can result from breakage. It should have been done when my dad had the S60 built, but was probably an over-site. Kind of like a billet drum in a 727…. Pretty cheap insurance in the scope of the mayhem that can incur….

I stripped a stud pulling off my race tires at Byron on drag week. So I had to use every Ugga Dugga i had available when I put my race tires on for friday...still haven't taken those tires off ha.

Many years ago, I got set of axles from a very reputable manufacturer that were beautiful in every way, except the stud holes weren't threaded for the 1/2" studs I intended to use. Yes they were ordered for screw in studs and the studs were even in the box separately.

Oh well, easy fix I thought. After wrecking a 1/2-20 tap and not putting a scratch in the holes, I sent them back. The company apologized, fixed them and life went on.

Questions from a guy that doesn't have a lot of experience drag racing, but is building a car for it:

1. The 5/8" Studs are really only suggested for the rear (drive axles) of the vehicle, not the front too, correct?
2. I have some Weld wheels, and some old Cragar Super Trick wheels that use long threaded shank lug nuts. Will I need to get completely different wheels if I opt for 5/8" studs?

I am asking these questions because I am getting ready to order a Dana 60 OR a Fabricated 9" for my Cuda build - and was already thinking about stepping up to 5/8" studs.

1) Yes. 1/2" on the front.

2) The holes in the wheels you have should be 11/16" and the shank of a nut for those fits those holes. 5/8" studs also have an 11/16" shoulder in the middle that also acts as the wheel interface. The wheel will slide over those when being installed. The fit should not be sloppy. If it's too tight to install with some wiggling, the holes in the wheels may need to be finessed - honed or filed, don't get the drill out. The studs you purchase need to be sized for the thickness of the wheel center. The shoulder portion needs to protrude out of the wheel some amount - typically ~1/2" - with an appropriate spacer used under the nut.

Strange has a selection of studs for use with all common wheels. Look at that for a better explanation. Personal experience causes me to recommend the one piece machined studs over the bolt with a sleeve style. Or look up the Strange instruction sheet for them.

We torque all ours to 125ft/lbs.
