I'm trying to run down when the Clean Air Package components were installed on Mopars. Specifically I am trying to find out if my 1967 Hemi 4-spd (Federal) needs the distributor vacuum control valve (code 8-27-335 in the 1967 parts book, PN 2843560). I have found vague references that only the California Hemi cars had them prior to 1968 but in 1968 and 1969, all the Hemi's had them. Any one have any definitive insight?

I'm pretty sure that, in '67, CAP was California only.

Two things, John, I believe you are right. Secondly I went to the Hamtramck Historical site and looked at the dealer books for 1966, 1967, and 1968. For 1968 it says Cleaner Air System, standard all models. For 1967 it says cleaner air package (mandatory Calif, NA otherwise or on Hemi). For 1966 it says Cleaner Air Package (mandatory Calif, NA otherwise). Sometimes I should take my own advice and do some research.

The CAP stuff started with model year 1966 in CA.
Early on, there was an exemption for multiple carb engines.
CA wasn't the Socialist state it is now, so things like dealer trades or people moving/selling non-CA cars seem to have snuck in under the radar.
Plus the Mopars weren't as obvious as the GM air pumps (I don't recall what Ford was doing in '66).

1966 did start the CAP in california and Hemi was exempt in 66. I had a copy of the letter but can't seem to find it. All 67 CA cars including hemi were cap. In 68 CAP was an all state thing. So all chrysler cars have carbs, ignition changes to support CAP.
