In the new HMN they show a pic of a 71 cuda at a show and state it was one of a few came in fm3. Are there any actually documented as such? Jon

I saw the same thing. I think the writer is misinformed with how he characterized it. Despite the color appearing in the color chips (the paint company ones, not Chrysler's), it was not a regular production color in '71. I think at least three '71 cars are known to have been built, but all of them were special order cars. Nick will be able to shed some light on this because he owns one of them.

Yep, I thought all the pink '71's were 999 cars not FM3 tagged cars. Nick would know, I'm sure.

A few (999 coded) FM3 colored cars were built (various models) I've seen a couple 71 Dusters so far. At any rate it was a small number of cars, but to the best of my knowledge no FM3 coded cars were built in 1971.

I don't know of any '71 Barracudas or 'Cudas that are documented as original FM3 cars, coded 999 or otherwise. Of course I have no way to know if they made any or or not. I haven't seen the Hemmings article. Other than my '71 Charger, I know of two '71 Challengers and a '72 Duster that came in pink to the best of my knowledge. Now I haven't inspected any of those cars but from what I know, they are probably genuine.

The biggest issue with a 999 car is that unless it's an untouched original, how do you prove the original color. I haven't seen any documentation on 999 cars that shows that they put the actual color on the window sticker or other factory documents. I would be very glad to see anything like that so I'd know what to look for.

By the way, not all special ordered paint cars are coded 999. There are of course the '69 cars that come with various special order codes. And my Charger which was built at the Lynch Road plant has a paint code of 148. Supposedly a quirk of that plant.

As for the paint charts. Most of the 1971 charts I have that have FM3 on them, they list it as Spring 1970 only. Even the '70 charts show the '69 Spring colors.

I assume that is from somebodie's web site and not from Chrysler.

Basically you could pretty much special order any color that had been previously produced and even ones from other manufacturers if you really wanted to. Also you could special order colors that were not available on your model but were on other models.

I don't exactly what the process was for the dealer to do it. If anyone does, I'd like to know.
