Very interesting the details of engine development with this Cosworth V12 and surely with all current engine development and here I thought you only needed to be concerned with suck, squeeze, bang, blow. wink

From your title I was honestly expecting a fifth or sixth "cycle" of some sort. Talk about lunch bag letdown !!

Sorry about that! Just found the video showed how much more than just the internal combustion was engineered into an engine. So many elements to consider designing and engineering to materials and now the engine being a stress member like a lot of motorcycle engines have been for decades. Even down to the type of clutch material to use and needing to help the launch with electric power to help the clutch performance. The fact that one engineer didn't want the extra grams of weight of the clear coating on the carbon fiber but styling guys did LOL. Never knew that F1 drove the valve train by gear drive only for reliability more so than performance. The thickness of the carbon fiber for the pulse pressure, etc., lots of things down to the number of catalyst needed per number of cylinders. Well it was all very interesting to me that it wasn't just all in the cylinder and valve train that goes into engine development. Oops my bad. blush

Even back in the glory days, there was more to it then just power. All the power in the world didn't help if you couldn't transfer it into vehicle movement.

Today they have just taken the development of everything beyond the back of the block to a new higher level then they used to.

To me, they have taken most of the fun right out of the pursuit. These days, the pursuit of more go is between the computer design and the chemist. It used to be that you blew something up, or wrecked something to find the upper limits of a design or theory, now they do it in a lab on a computer. Its more cost effective and efficient now, but it was more fun and excitement the old way. Gene

My thoughts exactly.

pretty cool . Very interesting article.

When one gets to that level of performance. EVERY piece on the car becomes an obstacle to get beyond. I cant imagine the engineering processes they deal with on a day to day basis

But at approx $3,000,000 per car. I'll never see or hear one in person anyway

Ed Iskendarian already "developed" that in the sixties. grin
