I'm changing my open rearend for a suregrip in the roadrunner (using same gears).

I took the open 489 case out of the car yesterday and removed the carrier. Pressed on new bearings on the new powrlok and am getting ready to put it back together. How do I setup preload and backlash?

I forgot to check backlash before I took the old carrier out but I did mark the adjusters so I think I could re-create the setup and measure backlash if that helps. Thanks for the help.

I would suggest reading the service manual procedure that can likely be found at LINKY!!!!
That will guide you on setting the pre load for both used and new bearings.
The marks you made on the adjusters are likely of little use mainly due to the differential being changed as well as the bearings, although the bearings "SHOULD" be the same.
Having not measured the backlash is more of a potential issue but not a show stopper. I, once again would follow the manual and set the backlash in the middle or a bit towards the loose end. twocents beer

Thanks guys.

I didn't know if I had to do anything different since I was using used gears.
