Is there anything special about them? I'm assuming just strip the e-torque motor off and that it's got a special front mount accessory drive that would need to be replaced with a conventional one?

Anything else?

for the large part it's the same engine. take the Etorque off and use the engine as is. the Crank sensor is bidirectional, The transmission is different if you intend to use the 8 speed though. it has a fluid accumulator inside for quick restarts.

Is it a special crank sensor that wouldn't work with the aftermarket ECU's?

you could swap the sensor out to a conventional one. the tone ring has the same number of teeth as a non-etorque. The crank sensor on e-torque engines puts out a slightly curved square wave to indicate direction of the crank (if the engine rolls backwards on shutdown, the pcm will know).
swapping in the normal crank sensor solves that.

thank you, that's the question I meant to ask - is it the same tone ring or something special.

in 2013 the tone ring changed slightly from the previous VVT crank tone ring. both are the 58+2 design and the same size but the cut is slightly different to facilitate that directional sensor. it will work with the older sensor.
