A friend's brother in law is selling a '68 body (all the details I have).
There seems to be issues with the VIN tag.
Can anyone tell me where the numbers are stamped in the body?
Thanks

I believe core support on drivers side near radiator and drivers rear under trunk rubber. not sure of any other places.

Thanks On a 1968 and older Mopar the VIN will ONLY appear on the VIN tag. All other stamped numbers, including on the fender tag, are the Shipping Order Number (SON). the only way to connect the VIN to the SON is with a broadcast sheet.

If any dealer paperwork is available it can be connected with the purchase order (if dealer hand wrote both the order# and s/n on it) and the invoice/firm invoice. The factory provided dealers with an invoice that I have one copy. It appears to be generated a few days before production, and the firm invoice after production. The invoice has an "invoice No" that includes the 3# production date (-) on the copy I have "GW" (assume it's St Louis + B Body)and (-) 5 digit so#, also on the invoice is a "List No." 4 digits (-) 2 digits (-) 4 digits. Then the "Vehicle Ident." No." is provided in the Vin format XX## (-) X#X (-) ###### in each example the (-) represents a dash. Included on the invoice is the "Route" listing the various rail companies and trucking company, the dealer address and C/D (Certif of Deposit) with the Bank Name and a list of the body type, color, trim, equip code and description of each and prices for E.H. &O (? Equip handling and Overhead?) and Factory Wholesale Price. The two separate invoices (Pre and Post Production Date) contain an adjustment of the price up or down. I've seen only this one set of three pages, others may have examples?

I saw someone asking the same question on Facebook, and as stated above, the only place to find a VIN number is on the VIN tag and broadcast sheet. There are three places the SO# is located and they should all match. Trunk lip on the quarter panel drivers side, core support drivers side, and the fender tag.

The 68 has partial vin stamped top center where auto trans and engine mates. Not sure about bell housing, manual trans case has partial vin stamped on pad. There is a lot to do verifying so and vin. Date codes of various parts relating to scheduled assy date of car. Even the batches of so #'s can shed light (with some variances) when compared to the vin sequence. A12, I think that is generally the engine plant, shift, and maybe date, need to check to be sure.

Not all 68's got the partial vin stamp & so far all the low perf engine's had no stamping at all on 68's

What about the engine on the driver's side near the transmission bellhousing or is that the VON/SON also?? I know that wasn't the OP's original question but isn't the VIN on the original engine too? That might be at the least a clue to the VIN being a match? I guess it would help if the OP would state if it is a HP model and from which assembly plant or does that not matter either? (and I thought I did ask about the stamped number ON the engine NEAR the bellhousing? my '68 RR 383 HP engine from St. Louis assembly has it there along with a spare '68 383 HP out of another G assembly plant RR also there.)

Lots of good information
It's a '68 Satellite-originally a 318, now a 400. He's not trying to pass it off as anything other than a modified 318 car.
There's an issue with the vin plate riveted to the dash-does anyone know if Back East is still around?
They have the build sheet, don't know if they've looked for numbers yet.
I haven't seen the car and probably don't want to get involved much more.
Thanks

Get a picture of the VIN tag we can tell you if is correct, it should be riveted to the dash with the special rivets that Chrysler used...
