.... isn’t the problem the trans fluid being too low ?

That the factory fill plug is way low and the level should be raised .....via some pipe fittings ... ???

Over filling keeps the input bearing wet and last a lot longer. I put over 300K towing miles on my Getrag 360 with a couple rebuilds.
I would fill it up to the fill hole then pull the shifter and add another quart.

How extensive of a rebuild?

Have you heard of that pipe fitting deal ?

Yes but I thought it would harder to fill than pulling the shifter.

I went thru one 20 years ago, he had his truck towed from the rear and it was low on fluid, wiped out the rear shift fork. If you ever have your truck towed pull the driveshaft, keep it full of fluid, and it is a pretty good trans.

With a used truck, any damage is already done; overfilling it now is like closing the barn door after.............

My high-mile '92 was on its second Getrag and failed shortly after I bought. Replaced it with a NV4500 which also has known problems.

I bought my 92 D350 Cummins with 80K on the clock and it already had a Chrysler rebuilt tranny in it. Had a metal rebuild tag on it and I don't know how many miles were on it. It lasted about another 20K for me and the front bearing and shaft fried.

So guyz ... its just a matter of WHEN you have to do a tranny rebuilt on these earlier stick shifts ?

When did they put in ones that were not destined to fail ?

Getrag nothing but scrap iron. throw it away and put a NV4500 in it.

My brother in law bought a 90 model new. It’s got 180,000 on it now. We serviced the truck about three years ago and we installed a street 90 fitting with the plug installed up. It allows you to install about a 1/2 quart or more fluid. I think it uses Mobil one oil. He’s had no problem since new. The nv4500 has fifth gear problems but they have a fix for that too.

Standard carries what's needed if you change the Getrag to a newer unit, in case you decide to keep your left foot/leg occupied.

The 4500's, 5600's and g56 all have issues to one extent. Standard has remedies for them all and has the updates done on the units they sell. I believe any of them are an improvement over what you have. Depends on how much you want to spend. Of the 6spds, the 5600 is the best with their gear fix. Check out the website. My truck is a 04.5 h/o with the nv5600 in it. Great unit. Run Amsoil in it with the 1-2 qt overfill done through the shift tower.
