The article makes it sound like no parts are needed for tuning, just drill jets. I don't want to drill jets, I want to change rods by the side of the road. Where can I get a selection of rods that will work? Carter strip kits aren't available as far as I know. I read somewhere that some other company rods work. I have a Street Demon and those rods are 2 step, not 3.

This is what I'm counting on plus there are a ton of parts on ebay. Yes I'm taking a chance maybe but I WANTED a thermoquad.

Given the odd chance that you might in fact be sitting on a pile of TQ tuning parts (guilty as charged here, been a fan all my Mopar "life", but it did take years of collecting stuff and always being on a lookout for a Tuning Kit showing up somewhere), anyways, I've bulit a spreadsheet that allows me to fairly quickly calculate the changes I need to make given my current BASELINE (so primary & secondary jets, and metering rods), the AFR readings I'm seeing (tuning with Innovate O2 sensor) and given my intended target for AFR, which one is the next step up or down in term of delivering more or less fuel.

Take a look at the attachment. This really is a "poor man's" fuel curve matrix LOL, but each TAB does allow you to input your BASELINE setups, and given the list of available parts it'll calculate those UP and DOWN recommendations.

I had intended some time ago to change these somewhat static pages into a sleek marco, so that you'd simply key in your BASELINE and your TARGET UP/DOWN settings and this thing would actually spit out a recommended rods & jets combo to use. I abandonded this when I started to use my old cell phone in the garage for quick on-line searching and it became increasingly obvious that what I needed to do was to develop a little handy cell phone app instead...beginning stages only though, and I need to re-visit that as I haven't spent any time on it for close to a year now.

The spreadsheet is an Excel format, but stuck in a ZIP file so that I could actually upload the darn thing. Just open it up in a ZIP utility (most WIN versions will be default just open it up for you) and double-click...if you have Excel installed it'll take it from there. Apache OpenOffice handles this as well, as does the older Lotus 1-2-3.

OK, so let me walk through a "how to" use-case.

Take a look at the attached image, I will point out how all these different elements are related to each other.

1) 2159 Metereing Rod TAB
- this '2159_Rod' TAB simply has the setups to allow you to assess/compare the various primary jet size changes and how they impact the overall fuel supply when compared to a BASELINE SETTING

2) BASELINE SETTING
- in that sheet you will find the table which shows 'BASELINE SETTING' in the top left corner
- you will see that in this case I am using a 75-2159 rod, 120-4098 primary jet (0.098) and 120-5143 secondary jet (0.143)
- I highlighted that using the RED highlight

2) "what if" comparison
- now when you look at all the other tables in that TAB, you will see that they show the same rods but with different primary jet sizes
- in the image below you will see that I'm now comparing the BASELINE settings to the PRIMARY JET=0.092 (BLUE highlight)
- the changes are all shown as % differences from that BASELINE setting and are highlighted in GREEN
- for comparison I include the same BASELINE rod in this table (highlighted in RED) which when used with the smaller primary jet shows the % changes to the fuel supply (highlighted in RED)

3) remaining tables...
- as I mentioned above, these just show you the same kind of comparisons but across various other PRIMARY jet sizes

Now, all these TABs are kind of static, meaning that they only account for changes to the PRIMARY jet sizes. Of course you can adjust the SECONDARY as well, but that's a change you have to input into each table separately.

Instead of doing that, if you look at the 'Comparison' table, you wil find the same BASELINE SETTING table as well as 9 different "what if" scenario tables. In these tables you can input any combinations of sizes of rods, primary and secondary jets. This is the dynamic part of the calculation, while the other TABs are pretty static, which allows me to do a quick "what if" assessment for a known metering rod that I'm already using.

Alright...so does the above explanation make it better, or worse actually??? LOL

It is for this reason that I thought a cell phone app would be so much better...

NOTE: Oh, important to point out the following: all these '% change' are calculations of the area change that the fuel is passing through. So I'm not actually just comparing a simple measurement (diameter of the jet opening), instead I am calculating the area of that opening, and then comparing the new area to this original one in order to see the '% change'. I did that because the parts here all have a circular shape (jet opening, rod cross-section, etc.), so I needed to see the real area of flow available to the fuel passing through this opening.

I really like the Thermoquad on my Power Wagon! It is more cold natured (choke not connected same as on my Edelbrock). I usually don't here in Florida. Once it's warmed up it's very responsive and when I punch it, for a heavy truck with a mostly stock 360 (RV cam with new lifters) it gives it a kick in the rear. And of course the sound is pure music to my ears!

However, now the shift points are way to soon though and all the adjustment out. I need a different piece up by carb that I don't know what's called so can't search. Looks like large popsicle stick parallel to engine with part hollowed out. Throttle stud runs through it and throttle lever attached to rear of it with cotter pin. I need longer one or need to hollow out mine more so I have more adjustment on the throttle lever. What is that popsicle piece called please? Thanks. Larry

Larry I'd be careful and would not run the set up as is until you get the linkage corrected. It controls line pressures in the transmission and could smoke the clutches in the trans if it isn't right. Find one of the old 3 piece adjustable kickdown linkage set or get one of the cable set ups.

I appreciate the wise advice and I haven't been driving it except a couple times as not to burn out trans with the early shifts. I held it down manually for later shifts the few miles I did drive it. I believe the one piece I mentioned got swapped out along the way when someone did the Edelbrock swap and didn't leave me the old one. It looks like factory linkage otherwise. I have adjustable linkage and loosened the block bolt down by trans but can't push the rod out of block because of popsicle stick piece up by carb doesn't have wide enough opening.

I have to take a pic, hopefully tomorrow!

how are your fabrication skills Larry ?
could you bolt two of the "popsicle" sticks together to get the length you need, and gain some adjustment at the same time ?
