If people want to drive around in a car that sounds like Grandma's Kenmore mixer, and do it on their own dime, I have absolutely no problem with that. biggrin. But as for me I am going to stick with the throaty rumble of a Hemi V8 until the day I die, drive and I strenuously object to being forced into electric cars, or paying for other people's electric cars.

What if........? What if AFTER the dealership lots were packed with new EVs the oil companies dropped the price of oil to rock bottom making gas and diesel super cheap???? This is a tactic they can easily do.

Keep old mopars alive.

What I tell everyone who is getting all worked up about electric cars is, just think how the people who made their livings from horses felt in 1900? We still have horses, and people still make a good living from that industry, not as many I will admit, but gasoline cars will be around for a very long time, and like the new internal combustion technology that replaced horses, the new electric technology, may replace internal combustion as our mainstream system. How many would go back to riding a horse to work? For that matter how many would use a manual typewriter in place of a computer? How many would give up a cell phone, and go back to a landline only phone? I still have a land line, and just got a letter from the phone company saying they will accept no new customers, and will be phasing out land lines in the future, which sucks because I live out in the country and a cell phone will not pickup at my home. But the only thing that does not change is that something is always changing.

JWB, the difference is that back then, new technology replaced the old stuff only if and when it was so far superior to the old way, and made more sense to the consumer, and stood on its own 2 feet financially, so that the consumer would voluntarily buy it. I don't think that is the case with EV's. With all the power plants being forced to shut down, they can't even keep up with basic needs. Where is all the extra juice going to come from when there is 300 million cars plugged in pulling 100 amps every night?
And there is no good reason to switch. Our petroleum infrastructure is amazingly reliable and efficient, and the modern internal combustion engine is almost magic in its reliability, safety, efficiency and cleanliness. It is incredible that in a matter of minutes we can refuel our vehicles, just about anywhere, any time, and drive 20, 30, even 50 miles for less than the cost of a can of soda.

Guys for the second time hammer electric replaced horses, gas already replaced EV. This is just a re-package. And will ultimately fail the way it has before. That said I agree with your other points.

......but 456..... but how about the city I grew up in .... Westfield Massachusetts.... previously known as WHIP CITY ... look it up !

No whips made there 2day !

But I’m not trying to make an argument that fossil fueled machines will disappear.

The only ones that will benefit from this mess is the power companies and politicians . This will not help the climate in any way I can see. We dont have the infrastructure and the power companies will look like the movie Christmas Vacation when Clark got his lights working. I don't see any good things that can come from this mess. Trying to dispose of used batteries will be a nightmare also,

Really well thought out responses .... up

Electric vehicles will never take over ... at least not until the teenagers these days have grand kids ...

But I started this to get some basics on costs ...

But the topic took on its own life ... thats cool

I’ll guess I’ll have to get through to Tesla in Tampa to get those basics ....

But keep it flowing smoke

I'm going on a road trip - Indy, a race track, wherever. Traveling at night, sometimes through places where there isn't much more than an occasional gas station. And/or you don't want to get off the main road too far or for too long. (I'm looking at you Richmond, Columbus, Philly, et al...)

So, if I have an EV, am I supposed to plan my trip around the limitations of the car. Or find a charging station somewhere in some parking lot, in a strange town, in the middle of the night, with a car that is going to take 20 or 30 minutes to charge, and leave me a sitting duck for any of the local ghetto goblins while I'm waiting?

Why would I do that?

The next Tesla I see in a gas station along the highway, dead in the water, won't be the first.

A toy for nerds, a short trip car, little commute car, I can see that. But that's all I see. Anything else it becomes a PIA

I believe if you have a Tesla it will provide you with a route with charging stations AND it won't let you pass a charging station if it doesn't have enough juice to reach the next one. This is what my neighbor - who has three Tesla's in the family - told me.

So does the car hold a gun to your head or steer you into the station? I don't think so, it probably just makes a nuisance of itself by constantly telling you to turn around. And stubborn owners who fail to heed the warnings are probably the one's you see at the side of the road.

Musk is a pretty smart man !!

Again, why would I subject myself to that? When my beater Honda can stop at any gas station, truck stop or convenience store that can be found at most interchanges on most highways, fill the tank, take a leak, get a coffee and be on the road in 15 minutes?

I tell my car what to do. Not vice versa. I pick my route.

I have a battery powered drill. I have multiple batteries for it. When one dies, I plug in another and keep going while the dead one charges. Rinse and repeat. If I had to stop, wait 20 minutes, then get back to work, I wouldn't own it. Just sayin'
