Is it safe to manually downshift into 1st gear from a roll with a 727, with a transgo 2 shift kit?

One way to find out shruggy work
I wouldn't do it above 10 to 20 MPH roll at light part throttle or better yet let all the way off before doing it twocents
I use to drag race a 415 HP M.W. 1963 Plymouth Belvedere 2 door sedan, I had A1 freshen the tranny that had a T.A. manual shift valve body in it and they changed it out to a low band apply puke, NO GOOD down
I use to shift it into neutral after going through the 1/4 mile with the stock push button shifter, it would still try to apply low gear band, NOT good rant
I bought another T/A valve body and put it in the car after that race up

Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

hi
should not be a prob with a tf-2 v b.

there is a provision to allow it to shift to low at any speed if you do the mod , i would not do it unless it was for a road race app maybe ?

no real diff than flooring it at 20 mph and having it automaticly shift to to low .

Actually, there is as difference; a forced downshift to first in Drive doesn't apply the rear band so there's no engine braking but manually downshifting to first applies the rear band (as Cab mentioned) so there is engine braking.

The question would be....are you manually downshifting to first with the throttle at idle or with power on?

You might want to read the valve body instructions to see what they say. I think that valve body will allow a downshift but some race valve bodies do not want to be shifted into first unless the car is stopped or moving very slowly.

it was always my understanding that the "downshift to low at any speed" option in the popular kits was intended for offroad applications, such as 4x4 trail riding or other [semi ?] low speed situations, that would require more rpm to get the particular job done.
i don't think it was meant to be shifted to low at 50-60mph or above.
but i have been wrong before.......... shruggy

The mod would also be useful for track cars that experience brake failures from prolonged hard use.
