It's a dry heat
On my recently purchased 2012 Ram 1500 sport .
it had an aftermkt radio in it I hate. I have what I can only assume is the original OEM radio for this truck that was laying on the back seat . I went to re-install it and have no sound, ( all other functions seem to work as designed )

I have no desire to go to any kind of aftermkt . and would much prefer the stock. Problem is,,,I cant find the exact same number radio.

I have a few ' SIMILAR ' radios bookmarked on ebay that the sellers SAY will work . But I want to be sure. AND Ive read some require a code to operate , is this true on all OEM radios from this period .

Bill I would "assume" that a code is required but the fact that you have other functions makes me think maybe not? My '95 E320 requires a code like when the battery is disconnected (or goes dead blush ) but at that point nothing functions until you put in the code. I think with your VIN and a call to your local RAM dealer they can tell you if it needs a code and what your code is. On the other hand I wonder if the lack of audio is the reason for the replacement radio??

Mike,
I got the supposed code the dealer said I needed.

They told me there would be a prompt when the radio powers up the screen will display 'CODE' and then I need to enter said code. Yet I get no such prompt. Ive read online not all OEM radios require such code to operate
The radio turns on , I have clock functions , all presets work , all the knobs work stations change , etc etc. The only noise I get is an occasional light 'thump ' sound.

There are several radios on ebay avail of various pt numbers and features .
I have no issues upgrading to a slightly different radio ,,,,,provided it will work as designed

PS,,,,,I just bought the truck this past August so I have no idea WHY the radio was replaced. Yet seems odd they would have kept it , if the reason it was removed in the 1st place was if it didnt work

It's possible that when the aftermarket radio was installed, the speakers were also changed and those speakers are incompatible with the factory radio. If you have a shop near you that specializes in audio, maybe they can help.

To be honest. I dont know. It never even entered my mind to try it that way

Radio is out and dropped off at a friends. He is an electrical engineer. and Ive already forwarded him the link above. and he already has it apart .
I should have it back next weekend and have my fingers crossed this repairs it

This is just a shot in the dark, but some aftermarket radios have a way to switch their output depending on whether or not it's being used with an amplifier. If it's set to use an amp and you don't have one, there'll be very little or no sound. Is there a mystery switch or button somewhere on the radio?

Nope.

I was told he thinks internal amp is dead. Or something on the board itself.
With no real parts list or schematic of the internals.
It was a shot in the dark.

So nothing ventured....nothing gained.

Have the dealer run your VIN. Ask for the options it was built with. The radio will have a three digit code like RHB. That is what you will look for as a compatible radio to your truck. It still may need to be unlocked. A lot of sellers have then unlocked and ready to go.
