Looking for suggestions on what oil to use in a 2002 WJ Jeep with 4.0 six cylinder, with roughly 180K on the clock. Engine is completely stock. I live in the upper midwest...
so I need a good oil that can hold up well in colder weather as well as summer...TIA.

Have you thought about a Synthetic Blend? I would suggest a Synthetic but, I'm not sure how your seals would like that type at the current mileage.

What does the owners manual recommend?

I'd suggest join bobistheoilguy.com, hit the forums, and ask there.

Run 10w30 unless you have lots of really cold starts (like less than say 5-10 degrees above zero) then I would run a 5w-30

Is there an old oil change sticker that may tell you what oil has been used for the last 180K miles? If so, I would consider sticking with that.

Otherwise, like mentioned earlier, if the low temps in your area get in the zero or below temp range where you live, a 5 W 30 would be good, if the temps pretty well stay near freezing or above, I'd go with a 10 W 30.
that stated, with that many miles on the motor, some don't like the 5 W 30 very well, but if the motor is OK with it, the thinner oil makes it easier to start on those cold mornings.

Along the same lines, if the summer temps get over 90 degrees pretty often, I would go with the 10 W 30 over the thinner oil. There is nothing wrong with changing the weight of the oil between seasons.

The difference between the dino oil and the full synthetic oil or something in between the two is pretty much a personal choice, nearly all of it is good, but sometimes the motor chooses one over the other. Most of the 5 W 30 oils tend to be synthetic or a synthetic blend, and that thinner oil seems to be able to take advantages of small leaks much better.

I want to say that my owner's manual for when I owned my 2004 Ram 4.7 recommended this. 10W30 for summer and 5W30 in a cold climate or a certain temperature point.

Thanks for the reply's. I haven't had time to find the owners manual, or look in it yet. I am assuming 5W30 would be the factory recomendation? It gets pretty cold in the winter here, so I will stick with the 5W30 for the next 5-6 months.

I have had 3-4 4.0 Jeeps. I ran 10w40 year round in all, never had an issue. (I run 10-40 in everything, don't own anything with overhead cams or timing belts) 10-30 would probably be just fine in yours.

The 4.0 is pretty tough, as long as you put something slippery in there its going to be just fine. I like the Mopar M090 oil filter, its the stock one and I run it on my Jeep and my Barracuda.
