I have heard some of his recent live performances and it sounds like he is struggling to get a word out.

What a great band Van Halen was with him as their front man. I have to say, they really were good with Sammy too but DLR really rocked that band like nobody else.

Facts are stubborn things.

Both versions were my favorite two bands. RIP EVH. Been almost exactly a year now.

I saw a bio on the early VH days recently. Roth initially got into the band, because he had some expensive sound equipment that his father had bought him. Both brothers really never cared for Dave's brash, outlandish style, especially when they got "famous" and rich. I remember seeing concert footage of them at a concert in the late 70's or early 80's??? Roth was drunk onstage, and admiting to the crowd he could not remember lines to the song he was supposed to be singing. "C'mon Dave....give me a break! Hey Hey Hey...one break, coming up!" laugh2

The singer often is the lightning rod of the band. The names of the drummer, bassist or the dude playing the flute are not as well known.
The breakup of Van Halen was purported to be because Eddie and Alex felt that they were the only ones to have a say in the direction of the band. DLR felt different. His solo career was okay but to me, not as spectacular as it was with VH.
I liked the Sammy Hagar version of the band about the same as the original. I was just out of high school when Sammy joined the band. That is a memorable point in a young man's life so I fondly recall the mid 80s Van Halen. Cruising, looking for girls, finding them and doing things that parents often frown upon, all the while the radio playing those great songs....

My neighborhood buddies and I were huge fans, having entered HS in 1979, we got what I think was the absolute best period of VH....
We saw them in concert for Women & Children First, Fair Warning, then Diver Down.. all three were spectacular shows with DLR in his prime with the acrobatic jumps, just great showmanship all over the stage.. They all looked happy and were definitely having a blast on stage. HS was def prime concert-going years, some great times.. we saw a lot from Aerosmith, Styx, Ramones, Rush, J.Geils, The Cars, Boston, to Molly Hatchet, ZZTop, Black Sabbath (another great show), BOC, Ozzie, what a trip back in time.
I'll never think badly of DLR.. he always gave a great show.

Ive seen VH with both David Lee Roth and Sammy Haggar.

I liked the music style of both.
But feel DLR was a better stage / live show .

I'm thinking he should've retired a few years back since his voice has been shot for awhile. He was one of the greatest front men in rock and roll history for a few years but I think it took a toll.

Of course it could just be genetics. Tom Jones is a coach on the UK Voice and once in awhile he'll launch into a song. Tom's voice actually sounds better now at 80 than it did when he was topping the charts 50 years ago. If you ever watch the show you'll be amazed when Tom stands up in is chair and starts singing. He has a stunning voice, especially when you consider that he is 80 years old.

I saw VH with Sammy in Nashville probably in the late 80’s, it was a great concert. The concert was filmed by MTV to air at some point on TV. Part way through the concert I saw what looked like a sheet fly up on stage. Sammy made his way over to where it was and took his foot and moved it around. During one of Eddies solos Sammy went over and put the sheet on like a cape. When the song was over Sammy was front and center on the stage and turned around with his back to the crowd and cameras and fanned out the sheet. In big letters it said " Who the F*&k was David anyway". My guess that part was edited out before the concert aired.

I never cared for DLR, fantastic singer and stage presence but always came across as a [censored].

Saw VH the week after Independence Day 1981, I had just met my future wife and she said they were heading down to Market Square Arena in Indy to see VH! The show was sold out but I said take me along, I will find a ticket! As soon as we parked I saw a group heading towards us, asked it they had a ticket and they said no. As they walked by I overheard them talking about a friend who never seemed to show up, so I turned around and yelled out SO YOU HAVE A TICKET!?! I got it for face value and DLR and the boys rocked the house! musik I think DLR should have retired 30 years ago, Gene Simmons was right... punkrocka
