Just got back from a Missouri to Yellowstone Park (and return) run. Saw LOTS of interstate snow gates. Many on “on ramps,” many across the interstates themselves. They were not lowered, of course. Seen them before in places like Wisconsin and Michigan. I’m just wondering, when the snow “hits the fan” and they close the gates, how much local havoc does that cause? I have visions of motel / hotels being sold out, restaurants jammed… people sleeping in cars out of necessity? Just wondering…

When you get a blizzard bad enough to close the snow gates, there is plenty of havoc to go around. Truck stops get full, motels get full, as long as the power stays on and the booze doesn't run out, usually it's not a bad time. The biggest problem is people driving around the gates thinking that they are special and the blizzard won't affect them.

One time back in the early 80's I went on a road trip with my Frat brothers in my 77 Dodge van. Coming back we ended up in a blizzard. I was hung over as all get go. We pulled into town finally after about 8 hours on the road and everyone was like, "where did you come from?". So we told them we just pulled in. Unknown us, the Interstates were all closed. Hmmm. That might explain why there was no traffic as we were doing a solid 60mph and there was 1 1/2 feet of snow on them. Guess they just shut the gates but we were already out there.

BTW, I made it in my 73 Roadrunner with G60-14's.

Snow gates ? .... there are miles AND MILES of them on the northern border of the sunshine state ! EXCEPT for parts of the punhandle ! IT KEEPS that dastardly cold WHITE STUFF from ruining the wOnDeRfUl climate here ....

I found out about snow gates in Wyoming in 1984. Even better than a van, I was on a 900 Kawasaki coming home from Seattle. I'd been riding in rain/snow for about 75 miles when I pulled off in Sheridan. They closed the gates behind me and I was in Sheridan from Wednesday until they opened the gates on Saturday. I had to push the bike out to the street because the motel parking lot hadn't been plowed. I was much younger (25) then. I can't believe I made it.

I flew out to Vail Colorado later September that year. I so enjoyed eating at a bar with live music and no mask. My last day there I wandered around Breckenridge at 80 degrees knowing a snowstorm was coming. I purposely left Vail at 3:30AM in my rental car. Nice weather turned into a record drop. Coming out of a tunnel in the Rockies had my windshield freeze fast. You never know out there.

I was living in Lafayette, Indiana at the time and we couldn't even get out of our front door for three days! We were on an intersection where the wind whipped-up a mount of snow in the center. A few days later a Jeep CJ7 with no top on it went flying down the road and tried to go over that mound. It sunk right in the middle and we had to run out of the house and dig out the clowns in the Jeep! Luckily it was broad daylight so we could see when they did it, otherwise they might have been in there a while. A week later the Jeep was finally dug out... I was living just south of the Indiana Dunes State park and was a paperboy, took me 6 hours to deliver the papers that morning, snow piled up chest deep on me. That was a miserable day. When the snow plow finally arrived some days later it got stuck and the neighbors all piled out to help unstick it.

Why would anyone choose to live where it snows? Greatly reduced: bugs, snakes, humidity, and liberals. My normal reply on why I'd rather have it cold than hot: I can always put on more clothes to warm up, but when I'm hot and naked, EVERYONE is uncomfortable
