The spring is for the rear servo, it's stiffer than original and makes the rear band release quicker on the manual 1-2 upshift; not necessary but advisable. Billet rear servos with improved spring retainers are available from sellers here.

Different spring, the one they tell you to remove is the accumulator spring which makes absolutely no sense....an old myth keeps getting repeated.

Inserting a rod in the accumulator eliminates its function which is to cushion the 1-2 shift and the application of the rear clutch.
