In the lanes, I point out to the guy I end up racing that he had cords hanging out of his slicks. We were about three cars from pre stage. He wiped the zero out of his 10.00 dial and put 11.00 on it. We staged, launched, and i was in second gear! He disn't lift early enough, and ran out- was about six car lengths ahead!

Dont know if its weird but.... there was another local racer who was asking me about my burnout procesure so I told him mine in detail but he kept asking fo rmore and more explicit details. Finaly I told him to just watch what I do some time then do what I do. Turns out we meet up in first round of eliminations. After the burn out we both prestage and stage, then the tree comes down and he just sits there....when I leave he leaves. His 10.8 vs my 9.7, I proceede to make my run and take the win light. After the run back in the pits I ask him what was up?? All PO'd at me he states he was doing what I told him " do what you do"

I was at Interstate dragways in Morehead MN back in 1998. I set a dominater to two step very low, like 2500 rpm on a 499 motor. Lots of raw gas and air collected under the car when I floored it. Our dials must have been close, because when the huge backfire lit up the track ( in the daytime!) The other driver looked over to watch me leave😜😂

2001 Citrus Nationals, A Challenger in opposite lanes hood popped open in top end... next round, ran another Challenger (this was not a Mopar race LOL) and I saw the front of his car dive down big time at the 1st mph cone as he was going to cut me loose... he did it too soon and too much, so I was able to grab the brakes in time also. Went a couple more rounds and was finally in the finals at 3:00 am in the morning. Was running against a divisional Super Comp hitter in the final, and knew he would be coming up on me with major MPH, I was dialed in 8.20, him 7.90. Looking for him at top end and didn't see him yet at mph cone and decided to again grab some brake...came up with the big W for the meet, with an 8.20 flat Coming back up return road to staging and saw my opponent still sitting at starting line with a broken trans... my buddies were all laughing saying I should have been able to hear them on the starting line yelling at me...hit the brakes..... as I was so close to breaking out.... on a solo pass Yes, sometimes it is good to be lucky too

I had my motorcycle down at Motion in 1981. The bike would run 12s easy, but just for fun I put it in Trophy dialed 22.99. I raced a guy on a 750 Honda dialed 13.20. I ran it hard to 1000' and grabbed the brakes hard. I slid up go the stripe and the motor died. I heard him coming and when he hit the first stripe I pushed mine across the finish. I sat there with the motor off and heard the announcer say I won. Other guy broke out trying to catch me and I was stopped.

Last years NMCA race at Us 131. Final round in N/SS. I have had good lights all day. Car has been deadly on its 9.25 index. Its close to 11:30pm. I'm in the left lane for the first time in eliminations and its pitch black out. So I plan to be conservative. My opponent Bruce Lang is tough. He just ran dead on in the semi's at 9.75 index. Its a quick turn around. The oil is warm so it's going to pick up. I add some weight to run dead on 9.25. As many know my car is a pushbutton shift. I shift with my thumb while grasping the bottom of the bezel with my other 4 fingers. Except this weekend. I have 5 stitches in the tip of my index finger with a huge dressing from smashing it in a car door 3 days before. So that finger has to point out and I'm shifting with the side of my thumb. The tree comes down and we're of. All is good until the 1/2 shift. My thumb slips between the 1st and 2nd gear buttons missing 2nd. It hits the limiter as I fumble the shift. The 2/3 is good and I'm running up on him. I can tell no way I'm going to catch him. His car is a fastback 68 Cuda. Quickly thinking it's got to tough looking back on the left side thru the C pillar because its so long. I pull up in his blind spot and hang there. He takes the stripe by a car. My win light comes on. He's 9.73x on a 9.75. As we talk about it afterwards. Bruce says: "My car had just run dead on. I saw you coming like a bat out of hell. Then in the dark I lost you. Couldn't lift as you were hauling. So I drove it thru". How did i think to do that so quick? Who knows. Sometimes you get lucky. Doug

Doug Ha good job quick thinking like that....Always have to be thinking from the time the tree drops till the time the win light comes on. Guys with the funny car cages and window nets also struggle with that too. I had a good one earlier this year where we had a problem with the car in the lanes that got me flustered, and I pulled out on the track in a hurry and didn't reset the box from a slower car the round before. I hit the tree and the car just sat there. Not the first time I did that over the years either lol. The guy in the other lane was dialed 4.82 and never touched the brake, running 4.78.....I am coasting down the track watching this all transpire and just coasted across the finish line for the win..... Luck does take you pretty far sometimes.
