Wifey has a 2016 Jouney that she likes. One of the key fobs has stopped starting the vehicle. It still locks and unlocks the doors but will not enable the starter button. I've checked/replaced the fob battery twice, no luck. The other fob works fine. I'm guessing we need to get a new fob? I see them on Amazon for about $40 with the note that they need to be programed by a locksmith or a dealer. Wifey call the local Dodge dealer and they want $250 to fix her up with a working fob.

Anyone dealt with this before? Can I buy a fob off of Amazon and get it programed easily or do I get stuck for $250 by the Dodge dealer?

I have on my 2012. I bought two on ebay for about $30 each and had the dealer program them - think they were about $60 each (ultimately they did it for free cause they did other work so threw it in). One died and the other is fine. You definitely need the correct programmer to do it - cannot self program. I tried to buy a scanner that has that capability, and gave up. It got real complicated trying to figure out what programmer would program what, and they were in the thousands of dollars. I was willing to spend money on a good scanner, but got discouraged and have yet to buy one.

I would probably spend the $250.............

Check the web for reprogramming instructions. I've used web information to successfully program fobs for my 08 PT Cruiser.
The locksmith I usually use refused to cut my ebay fob.
I ended up at Home Depot and the guy cut it for frss.
Good luck

I know some of the cars I have owned said if you have 2 working FOBs, you can program another on your own. Read the owners manual and see what it says. Not sure if a partial working FOB will qualify as a working FOB. I know the dealer I had program one said they won't guarantee the Ebay ones to work. I needed a new FOB because I lost one.

Works on older keys but not fobs. Fobs need dealer or locksmith programming, or anyone with the proper software.

Thanks guys. This whole thing is stupid. What in the world is wrong with just having a key you put in a lock cylinder?

Yes, I know this, but that key only works on the door. Will not start the vehicle.

There is no lock cylinder to insert a key into in the car. Only a button to push to start . Am I wrong? Am I missing something?

I've read that you can pop out the button and there is a key slot under some of them. Never tried to remove one because I would probably break something.

Thanks, but I don't think that works with a Journey. Different fob (and button?) set up. Nothing to insert and turn on the fob.

Works on older keys but not fobs. Fobs need dealer or locksmith programming, or anyone with the proper software.

I also worked on it and with the help of a locksmith i programmed those keys.

If your fob is stock it will have a key in the bottom of it. https://www.bing.com/images/search?...eHoverTitle&first=1&disoverlay=1

Have you tried this? https://hiride.com/journey-start-engine-dead-fob/

On my 2010 Pursuit which came with 4 fobs, 3 have stopped working confused I've tried several different new batteries (and brands), cleaning contacts, tightening contacts, all to no avail.

Facts are stubborn things.

Yeah, that didn't work either. Ended up buying a new fob from the Dodge dealer. $252 with programming. Reused the metal key that only opens the door. Stupid fobs.

I had my ca key replacement by a local auto-lock expert and he charged $270 for it.

Ive purchased aftermarket and had them programed. It just depends on who it is on how much they charge. Be careful though. The push button start Fobs are different. They look exactly the same. I have yet to find an aftermarket one for less than about $130 each. The old cut door key will fit the new fob. so you can manually unlock the door.
