Wood stove paint, not header paint twocents
That or have them ceramic coated by a good shop scope

I have great, long lasting results using VHT High-Temp paint. Great stuff and it touches up nicely.

I used all kind of stuff over the years and nothing last's. Ceramic coat is the way to go.

Like the others who commented already, the ceramic coating I did on mine (done by a speciality shop, not myself) lasted a good 10 yrs of seasonal driving only (summer time) and came out with no rust on them. Mind you, the coating did start to form into these 'crystal like' flakes where eventually it would peel off in that spot, but that's what I noticed just this year having take them off, and these areas were limitted to just a few spots.

So all in all, I was very happy to see how these lasted. Basically I think I could bring them back to the same shop who will put them through a complete pain strip process first and get them re-coated.

I used flat black paint for outdoor grills. Cheap and easy to touch up. Never experienced any problems. Drove my Dart with those headers for years.(yes a couple of times in rain coming back from shows) No fuss. No muss.

Sandblasted and painted with BBQ black paint. Works really well and still lasting 7-ish years later.

Have not used on headers, but have used on cast iron manifolds with success.

Unlikely you can do this curing in an oven with larger headers, but I did the 3 step curing in an oven. Has held up well.
Says flat black, but almost has a dark cast iron appearance.

I have Jet Hot coated manifold and sadly they rusted after a few seasons, so tried this on my next build.

I had pretty good luck with the Seymour "Cast Blast" high temp stuff. Smells a little as it bakes on on the first couple of runs, but ok after that. I tried the silver Eastwood brush on stuff too but I thought the Seymour spray bomb actually lasted longer.

X3 been using it for over 40 years. The only Ceramic coating I have seen that is even comparable is Jet hot coatings, everything else is over priced short term cr-p. Believe me I have seen a lot of it on customers cars twocents

I've never found a paint that will last for very long on headers. Even the apply at home thermal coating I tried only lasted a few years before it eventually cooked off. I've always been very diligent about prep work too. Tried sandblasting, bead blasting, cleaning with alcohol, cleaning with lacquer thinner, cleaning with acetone. I've tried VHT, BBQ, and other high temp paints. I'll also add that my engines have tended to be at the higher end of the compression spectrum and tend to produce some very high exhaust temps. Whether that is a factor or not, I'm not sure.

VHT works pretty well but you do have to follow the instructions, I have use grill paint also. works, the key is to get all the factory paint off, get them very clean, then apply the new paint.

can nickel plated headers be blasted and painted, or does the plating need removed first ?

I would say it depends on
1. If the plating is completely intact
2. Do not get overly aggressive with the blasting, just roughen the surface. If you break through the plating it may lead to future peeling.

i have a set of 2" to 2 1/8" stepped TTI's that have several [caveman] damaged tubes that need repaired.
the plating seems to be intact, so after i section in the repair pieces, i planned on painting them.

TC@HP2 I believe you may be on to something as my engines using headers with flat black grill paint were at 9:1 or so. They did burn a bit when first running the engine in and tuning. I just masked off a little and resprayed up top. As far as cleanliness in preparation...probably not the best. Just hit the already used headers with a scotchbrite green pad and wiped off with acetone before spraying. shruggy

Never had any high compression motors using my header method.
