Did you try to slightly choke it when it is acting up to see if it wants to smooth out???????

Oddly, I did change the ballast, and it seems to have solved the problem.

I had to use an old one I had found as all my other Magnums have a single ballast. So....... I think problem may be solved.

I did bump up the idle oh so slightly.

Thanks gang!!

Bad connection (intermittent breakup) or high resistance (low power to module) ??.

what did the ballast connectors look/feel like when disconnected ? did the "new" one feel like the connectors were tighter to plug on ?

If the fix stays,
I'm going to guess the one or both of Ballast resistors ( assuming it was a 4 pin) were breaking down internally. Raising the idle speed the alternator produce more current to compensate. It also coincides with it being OK when cold and starting right back up as the ballast is bypassed> Time will tell beer

One on the car was only a few weeks old. Both were tight. The one on the car when I got it was from the conversion kit the original owner used, which went bad recently. Only Jesus knows how old it was. New one was a Carquest? piece I picked up. smirk

I ordered 2 MoPar OEM's from Ehrenberg today. wink

Thanks to everyone who helped out diagnosing this. I only thought ballasts went totally out when bad.

They can do that, but also have a poor connection between terminal & coil inside.
Term. are brass, coil wire (nichrome maybe) & are just crimped together.
They get hot & that connection can degrade over time.
