Is it best to tilt the bed to remove the fuel pump assy?

That is not a bad way as long as everything come apart.

I've never swapped one on an '88, but that's how I did the fuel pump on my 2001. If your choices are tilting the bed vs dropping the tank, remove a few bolts and tilt the bed.

keep in mind that the complete fuel pump module IS NOT AVAIL. if you need 1 and if you can find an NOS one, they are 4-500 dollars. used module is 3-400 dollars. if need rebuilt, tristarradiators rebuilds them to like new.good luck and be careful removing the hoses from the nipples on top.
