As an apple example, it is almost impossible to replace the batteries in the newest Airpods.

As a Google example, it is extremely hard to remove the screen without breaking it of the original HTC manufactured Pixel phone.

I also think that when a manufacturer stops providing security updates to a device’s software,
they should by law make available a software patch that “unlocks the bootloader”
so that the owner or volunteers can secure, update or modify the still useable device they bought.

I think this should also apply to automobile computers.

This may all be coming to a head in the near future. There is likely to be Federal legislation on this and the state lawsuits are winding their way through the courts. What will be interesting will be to see how much 'teeth' the Federal legislation will really have. Something will likely get passed because this is very popular. But industry is lobbying very, very hard.

They don't really have to regulate anything. Get one big player in different industries into the movement and customers will force the hand by buying that companies products. It's already starting to happen in the farming industry that people are buying more equipment from the companies that don't lock you out and are skipping the big brands that have bee dominating for decades because they know at some point they'll have problems down the road.
