I'm interested in hearing from members who run a Gear Vendors unit, specifically anyone who has done more maintenance than just changing the oil. So familiarity with parts sources, assembly/disassembly do's & don'ts, diagrams, etc. From what I've found Gear Vendors doesn't sell parts but offers a "service" to refresh their overdrives but it ends up being 1/3 the cost of a new unit (I'm not taking that path). They appear to be pretty simple units and common replacement parts needed are O-rings, solenoids and the clutches.

I'm working on a truck that has a GV behind a 904 and the overdrive is not shifting (only has roughly 24k miles on it but the truck isn't used often). I know this can be low or dirty oil, faulty solenoid, bad or dry O-rings on the solenoid shaft or, bad clutches. I'm looking at a kit through Maximum Overdrive and will probably go that way to refresh this unit. I'm just looking to hear from others who have messed with these on their own.

I've had one in my Dually since 1996, and it's been bulletproof, so I have no service or parts experience.
I merely change the sump fluid every couple years (truck doesn't get used much, lives a better life than some people laugh2)
All I can offer is to check the wiring & switches.

I have had one in my 68 Camaro since 2000. Its behind a 750hp 540 pump gas deal runs 9's and can be driven anywhere. Never had any issues with it.

Do they come with a forged 1350 joint slip yoke?

The first thing I would do is call Gear Vendors.

The one I had in my Bee would drop out of overdrive by it’s self. GV tech told me the controller would cause that if it wasn’t getting clean 12 volts. Told me to put a relay on the power side hooked up to a clean 12 volt source. Never did it I just removed the controller and wired it directly through the foot switch and manually operated it since I had a manual reverse valve body in the car. Drove it like a four speed.
Dirty or low oil will cause them to act up and not engage.

I'm not trying to hi-jack the thread but, the GV are safe to tow with? shruggy

They are made for RV and diesel applications so I would think so.

Safe to tow ? Oh heck yes.
On hills, I often just drop from 3rd to 2nd, leave the GV on.
If I'm turning the GV on/off, I drive into or out of it, so to speak, to soften the application.
But over about 45-50 MPH, it's always on.

The one in my Camaro came out of a junkyard from behind an old F450 tow truck

my problem with gearvendors, is if you get a unit from the junkyard, such as above, they have the stones to demand a return of the chevy/ford/whatever, before they will THEN sell you the parts needed for YOUR installation.
i don't think that's right on so many levels ! mad

I have a GV in my car. I bought it used and rebuilt it with the Maximum Overdrive kit to make sure it worked like new. Very easy to disassemble and rebuild. The MO kit is a good one.

Thanks BD. I assume you did this without any type of assembly diagram just by replacing seals as you disassembled and the re-assembled everything when you were finished. At least that what I'm looking at. I talked with Maximum Overdrive about a month ago and have been waiting for the clutches to come in. I do see that IPD in Portland has a seal kit-only too. I'm not sure if MO can provide a kit without the clutches if I don't need them.

Correct. They're not as complicated as something like an automatic transmission. Quite simple to disassemble, replace worn parts and reassemble. About the only challenging part would be replacing the bushing on the tail housing. If your bushing isn't worn too badly, you can skip that step, which I did. BTW, they use standard speedometer gears from a TH400 if you want to use the speedometer output and need to calibrate it with your rear gears.

I spoke with Glen and Maximum Overdrive yesterday. It turns out he just experienced a heart attack but is doing well after a 3 hour hospital procedure. He's just off-line from his business but it sounds like someone is helping out with shipments, etc.

I thought this would be pretty much as you described, reasonably straightforward and not too complicated. Glen did mention the need to have a bearing separator and a hydraulic press for clutch replacement. Did you replace the cone clutch on yours since it comes with the MO kit? Is the bushing you mentioned for the tail shaft ? I could see a large seal or bushing in their kit picture and wondered if that was for the tail section. The unit I'm dealing with on the pickup had been leaking out the tail shaft area and dripped down onto the exhaust cross over directly below.

Yes, I replaced the cone clutch and it's not difficult. The bushing I mentioned is in the tail shaft housing. It appears to be the same as what would be used on a TH400 as well. It's the bushing that the OD of your driveshaft yoke rides on. If it's real worn, you'll probable have some vibration issue and potential pre-mature wear on the bearings in the GV. A leak out the tail shaft housing is most likely a worn end seal on the housing. That seal should come in the kit.
