So I just got my 49 Dodge pickup on the road. The undercarriage is a 92-96 Dakota 4x4, the drive train is out of a 44,000 miles 96 Dakota.
According to the under the hood tag on the 96 Dakota, the truck was suppose to be equipped with a limited slip diff. The axle assembly looked like it was in that Dakota since birth.
Is there any telling signs that it is actually a limited slip diff, short of pulling the cover off? There are tags on two cover bolts for the cover, one is the gear ratio, and it seems accurate and jives with the front axle gear and the gear ration on the under hood tag. The second tag can barely be read, but it looks like it may have been a number, rather then anything else.

I had the truck on a hoist today and gave the rear tires a spin. With the trans in park, it freely turned the tires in opposite directions. I have a 90 Dakota limited slip under my coupe, when its in gear, you can not turn the tires, and in neutral both tires turn the same direction (I didn't try the 96 in neutral). So, is the 96 toast, or is it not a limited slip? Is it possible the low mileage over the many years has somehow dried the clutches in the limited slip and there is a simple fix? Gene

Sounds like an open based on the hand spinning. Other test I kinda recall from the FSM was trans in N, one tire off the ground, try to spin it, if it turns either direction the LSD is toast. I'd say it's time to pop the cover and see what's really in there.

It's an open
I put a new track lok in the back of my 96 dakota when I got it. Different hood along the way maybe? (Sticker don't match the truck maybe?
Up to 96 same spline as any 8-1/4 from the 70s. The next year they changed spline count.
I have 1 more brand new track lok in the box. But have 3 other vehicles that I could put it into. 78 sport fury, 80 volare or 85 D150. Might have to pick up a couple more.
PS I might have to get ahold of you about leftovers from your donor dakota's. I don't plan on getting rid of the 96 til the frame folds in half. It's been too good of a truck for me. I'm about 3 hours south of you.
I usually make it up your way (Oregon IL) for a tractor show around memorial day, that this blasted covid hasn't let happen for 2 years now.

There isn't a lot of stuff left here from the donor Dakota, most of it got used on my 49 pickup, and a lot of it was just rusted crap I think there is a scratched up hood, and a tailgate with some rust on the bottom left. There is also a set of 4 wheels (like on the rear in the picture) with two really good tires all season style, and 2 nearly junk tires on them.

I do have a 95 extended cab rear wheel drive with a 3.9 auto that has been my winter beater that will be going away soon for just under a grand. It is a driver that has pretty well been poorly maintained since its been here (I've put around 7,000 miles on it the last 3 years and the truck has around 130K on it). I bought because the owners grandpa sideswiped something with the right side of the truck. It doesn't look very good, but the door still functions and the power windows still work, and I needed something to drive in the winter. I did put a new heater core in it last fall. Would be a great source of parts to keep one going, as long as you don't need much sheet metal. My 49 is replacing the 95, so it will be gone before the end of Oct (plates run out then).Sooner would be better then later with the 95. Gene
