Guys I know not all tracks enforce the rules totally but you should look at "Flash Shields" in the rule book. I've seen many sidelined because they didn't meet those requirements. It's not a new rule I know it goes back to the 50's.

The round wire, in cross-section, is a surprisingly dirty (non aero) obstruction, and also disturbs air around it.
It's the reason screens do not protect jet engines against bird strikes: ruins the mileage.

I wish I had more room under my hood scoop to run taller air cleaners or velocity stacks. I can only fit about 2" high filters on top of my carbs. I know it is not enough air flow and not high enough above the carbs. At one time I had a set of velocity stacks with the foam elements. Those seemed to work great. They were about 4" tall.

If a jet engine can pick a man up and suck him into the engine, i would think a jet engine would suck the screen in. I agree, anything over the opening is not the best. Open uncovered works best, but these screens work very well for street driving and not losing much.

Scoop with a pair of K&N filters. No difference in AFR with or without filters. Without filters there is fuel being sucked out causing fuel vapor towards the windshield at speed.

I ran the car down the track and tested a few things last saturday. First off i found the filters with filter tops to be slower than the velocity stack with a screen lid. Ran a 6.60@105.89 8th mile. 6.544@106.30 with stack and a screen lid. 6.541@106.33 with stack and no lid. So, the screen is not really hurting enough for me to run without it.

Home made Perspex scoop with RC2 4" filter. Unfortunately a hard landing after a big wheelstand broke it somewhat mad. The next one will have a 3mm Aluminium base plate grin. Only had one decent pass before breaking it (9.57 @ 141.??).

Haven't tried one yet, but i'm thinking the oval filter may be the best way to filter on a tunnel ram.

I run screens on my carbs for the street and put my Super Shaker over them. At cruise nights I cap them with the Moroso carb caps. Don't trust anyone dropping something down the carbs, just in case.

If a screen is large enough it's harmless, but per square inch it's a restriction compared to fully open.
The round wire used is a very dirty aerodynamic shape compared to a teardrop, ellipse, etc.
