Hi, has anyone replaced their 10 ply race trailer tires with 14 ply? They don't seem to be that much more costly. Maybe they would be more durable? My trailer has a pair of 6,000 lb axles, and with my heaviest car and all my stuff in it, it's probably about 10,500 pound s. Other than the extra cost, is there any drawback to using 14 ply tires? Thanks, Joel.

You’ll be able to skid the tires 50 more feet with them!

My “latest” tire experiment are G rated Greenball towmaster ACS 235/85/16. I run them at 95psi cold and have 8500 miles on them so far and they are doing great! In a max effort to get three years out of a set of trailer tires I removed them memorial weekend and have stored them inside. I’ll put them back on the trailer prior to Labor Day weekend for our 1300 mile trek north to Thunder Valley in SoDak . I live in trailer tire he77.... road temps can reach 150 degrees and we often see tire temps in the 160+ range. Across Wyoming we’d see 80-85 degrees. I’ve never gotten three years out of any E rated tire I’ve ever used. Two years for sure, but that third would involve a tire failure or two. I always carry two spares so the purchase of 6 “G” tires was quite the investment.

I also have the six lug wheels, but 16”..... that’s the game changer.

I had the Greenball Towmaster load range E on my old trailer and they held up well.

Are they 14 ply, or 14 ply "rated"? I had some Michelin XPS ribs rated 10 ply, but they were only 5 ply, 4 steel tread bands, one steel sidewall band.

Rated. I probably should have specified that. I don't know if you can buy the actual ply count tires anymore.

I too made the switch from 15" to 16" tires. Tire life has improved greatly cost is similar and I believe it even pulls a little easier.

Just curious if you had any clearance issues after the swap. The 16" tires are approximately 2" larger in circumference than my 15's I need tires and rims so if clearance isn't an issue now would be the time to make the change.

Ok

Better be sure of clearance before jumping to 16". I had clearance issues going from a 205 to 225 15" tires. Had to get some 1/4" spacers to make it work safely. I also installed slightly longer lug bolts.

My previous trailer came with 15-in Goodyear marathons. I went through about 20 tires before I finally switched to 16-in red ball tow masters.
When I ordered my current trailer back in 2015, I specified 6,000 lb axles and 16-in rims with load range e-tires

I see that the load range f 12 ply rating and the load range g 14 ply rating are very readily available for not too much money more than the load range e 10 ply rating. That is why I'm wondering if there's any reason not to upgrade?

I sell a lot of the G rated trailer tires and some F too. All of my customers running trailers hauling heavy equipment have not had a failure since we switched from E load tires to G load tires. If you need tires and they are available in your size then go for it.

Right now my “gray area” on this whole deal is that my steel rims are 3200lb rated.... I’ve seen a couple “alloy” rims with 3580 ratings. Not sure of my trailer weight total, but combined we’re 18,500 when loaded for multiple day events.

We bought a new Aluminum deck over 22 foot trailer for local deliveries April 2020 .. we do use it a lot , 400 miles each day easily, it has two 6000 lb axles , we wore the original tires out quickly , by August one was blown out and two were worn out ..I replaced them with Carlisle 14 ply and what a difference .not one problem since and drivers claim the trailer rides better ..we have put about 50,000 miles on them , they do need to be replaced now
but , I sent that trailer to my Minnesota location , they will use it much less than we do ..and I bought two new trailers , got them in 6 weeks these I ordered with 14 ply tires

I did just that this spring. One of the local racers own a trailer service and sales business and told us about a new tire and many of us have switched to it and been very happy with them.

It looks like a very well built tire and I believe they are made here in the US and look to be constructed way better than any of the previous tires I've ran.

I'm running the Hercules H-901 ST 235/85/16, they cost $175 each locally

Ordered the Herc's off of Ebay yesterday, they showed up today! I'm impressed with the service and with the tires. They are stout! And regroovable. With 6 tires, I'll have 4 on the ground and 2 spares. I think I'll try to find 2 matching rims so I can have the spares in the rotation. They should last a long time. Now I need to find time to mount them.
