I do not like snakes very much, they just crepe me out.
Anyone know what kind of snake this is?
I just killed (sorry) it at my slate steps to my house in Northeast PA
How do I keep them away from the house?
Thanks Bob

Looks like an Eastern Garter Snake. Completely 100 percent harmless, even when alive.

Yes that looks right. Without a doubt it was there on the stone warming up and hunting the rodents and other critters that are hiding in your slate steps

Yes I had to escort about a 3 foot long black snake out of the house about two weeks ago. He got to live to scare the crap out of someone else later. My neighbor loves them and I gave it to her. She was handling it kinda carelessly and he tagged her. Normally I just leave them alone but this little devil was in the house. Got to go.

A couple of days ago my bride was putting some stuff away in our storage building and was freaked out by a common brown worm snake. Poor thing was only about 6" long... Knowing it was harmless, I picked it up and tossed it out into the yard. My wife proceeded to take the axe and chop it into pieces. Shoot, I used to keep a garter snake in a terrarium when I was a kid. I wasn't freaked out by that tiny little worm snake, but she sure was! laugh2

Yep - defnitely a harmless garter snake. I'd much rather have harmless snakes around than rodents.

I can think of only five types poisonous snakes that are native here in the U.S., Rattlesnakes, there are many different sub species of them, they all rattle though, Coral snakes, Copper Heads, Water Moccasins and Cotton Mouths. Maybe the Cotton Mouths and Water Moccasins are the same confused
My messages is most of them help us, not harm us up
I use to catch a lot of snakes when I was a kid, mainly Garter snakes, Gopher Snakes and a few racer snakes, the racers were really hard to catch due to how fast they could get away shock
Most Rattle Snakes will stand and fight with you by trying to bite you if you bother them like trying to catch them tsk
My message is don't kill them if they are not trying to hurt you, let them go away instead up twocents

I chop off their heads and let my chickens decide what flavor it is. Funny story about those chickens, I let em out of the coop the other morning and they all ran out to the middle of the pen and gathered in a big circle (13 hens and a rooster) and took turns having a run at a little grey rubbery looking fellow that just happened to be in the pen, I had no idea the snake was there when I let em out so it was quite odd that they ran straight out and gathered in a big circle, eventually one of em grabbed it and ran around the pen with the others chasing in single file line for a good 30 minutes, it was quite the circus, chickens are very funny to watch running in person with no arms or anything. I know in my head most snakes are completely harmless but man they scare the crap out of me whenever I stumble upon one up close!

I wonder if they taste like chickens to chickens?
