The question is, do you really need them?
We've been 1.36 60 ft. with Cal-Tracs and a stock shackle with Poly bushings.
If I had a dedicated drag car or was going much faster I would consider them.

I would have thought having a free working spring would be great for any type of car? Do they detract from normal road handling in anyway?

People have said they wear out quickly and make noise (no personal experience) 3. Require welding and fabrication to install and aren't a simple bolt in. They ARE lot of effort to install which, IMO, would yield minimal results in a street car.

I just did a mini-tub and opted for shackles because of the noise. One thing you can do with shackles is use poly bushings which allow more movement than rubber.
Someone mentioned sliders being more work to install. I don't know how he figures that !! The sliders can be welded right to the inner rail and the car will still have stock ride height. Whereas to maintain stock ride height with shackles you have to drill the rail for the new shackle eye AND you have to notch the rail so the shackle has clearance during its travel.

I use nylon slides on my sliders, VERY quiet, they use them on 4x4 set ups
